About the role

The Hospital Controller oversees all accounting operations of the hospital, including financial reporting, general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll accounting, fixed assets, cash management, internal controls, and financial compliance. The Controller ensures financial statements are prepared accurately and timely in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), healthcare regulations, and organizational policies.

Responsibilities

  • Direct all hospital accounting operations.

  • Maintain the general ledger.

  • Oversee monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes.

  • Prepare accurate financial statements.

  • Ensure timely reporting to executive leadership and the Board.

  • Analyze financial performance and identify trends.

  • Maintain chart of accounts.

  • Prepare: Balance Sheet, Income Statement, Statement of Cash Flows, Budget-to-Actual reports, Departmental financial reports, Productivity reports, Capital expenditure reports.

  • Ensure reporting deadlines are met.

  • Prepare supporting schedules for audits.

  • Oversee Journal entries, Reconciliations, Accruals, Fixed asset accounting, Depreciation, Intercompany transactions, Inventory accounting, Bank reconciliations.

  • Coordinate Accounting For Patient revenue, Contractual allowances, Charity care, Bad debt, Payroll expenses, Benefits, Physician compensation, Grants, Restricted funds.

  • Supervise Vendor payments, Invoice processing, Check runs, Electronic payments, Vendor reconciliation, 1099 reporting, Payment controls.

  • Career Development and Evaluation of Employees.

  • Assist The CFO With Annual operating budget, Capital budget, Department budgets, Budget forecasting, Variance analysis.

  • Audit Coordination Support CFO As Accounting Contact For External financial audits, Single audits (if applicable), Medicare and Medicaid cost report support, Internal audits, State regulatory audits.

  • Prepare audit schedules and supporting documentation.

  • Regulatory Compliance Ensure Compliance With GAAP, Governmental Accounting Standards (if applicable), CMS financial reporting requirements, Medicare reimbursement regulations, Medicaid reimbursement regulations, IRS requirements for nonprofit hospitals, State healthcare reporting requirements, Bond covenant reporting, Internal financial policies.

  • Maintain Accounting For Capital assets, Construction in progress, Depreciation schedules, Equipment acquisitions, Asset disposals, Capital project accounting.

  • Oversee accounting modules within the hospital ERP system.

  • Support The CFO With Process improvements.

  • Identify Opportunities To Improve Financial reporting efficiency, Closing timeline, Internal controls, Automation, Accounting workflows, Cost savings, Data accuracy.

  • Knowledge GAAP, Healthcare reimbursement, Medicare cost reporting, Medicaid reimbursement, Hospital finance, Internal controls, Budget development, Financial analysis, Fixed asset accounting, Treasury management, Payroll accounting, Tax reporting for healthcare organizations, Financial statement preparation, Audit standards.

  • Key Performance Indicators (KPIs): Timely month-end close, Accuracy of financial statements, Clean external audit results, Budget variance performance, Days to close the books, Internal control compliance, Timely regulatory reporting, Accounts payable processing accuracy, Balance sheet reconciliation completion, Staff productivity and retention, Financial reporting timeliness.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Accounting or Finance.

  • CPA certification preferred.

  • Minimum of 8 years of progressive accounting experience, preferably in a healthcare setting.

  • Experience with hospital financial systems and ERP software.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet strict deadlines.

  • Experience with GAAP and healthcare regulations.

  • Experience with internal controls and financial compliance.

  • Experience with financial reporting and audit coordination.

  • Experience with fixed asset accounting and treasury management.

  • Experience with payroll accounting and tax reporting for healthcare organizations.
