Controller - Nonprofit
This role is with a mission-driven nonprofit healthcare organization dedicated to helping people live healthier lives and improving access to quality care. As the organization grows its programs and community impact, they seek a Controller to provide strong financial leadership, strengthen accounting operations, and ensure the integrity of financial reporting.
About the Role
The Controller will oversee the organization's day-to-day accounting operations, financial reporting, month-end close, budgeting support, and internal controls. This person will work closely with leadership and cross-functional teams to ensure accurate financial information while continuing to build scalable processes and best practices. The ideal candidate is a hands-on accounting leader who is comfortable working in a mission-driven, growing environment and can balance technical accounting expertise with operational problem-solving.
Responsibilities
- Oversee all accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, cash management, and reconciliations.
- Lead the monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes and ensure timely and accurate reporting.
- Prepare and review financial statements, management reports, and financial analyses for leadership.
- Maintain strong accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls.
- Manage the organization's annual audit and serve as the primary point of contact with external auditors.
- Support the preparation of budgets, forecasts, and financial projections in partnership with leadership.
- Monitor cash flow, operating performance, and financial trends and communicate key insights to management.
- Ensure compliance with nonprofit accounting standards, regulatory requirements, and applicable GAAP.
- Oversee grant and restricted-fund accounting, including tracking revenues and expenditures and ensuring funds are used in accordance with applicable requirements.
- Partner with program and operational leaders to improve financial processes and accountability.
- Identify opportunities to automate, streamline, and strengthen accounting processes as the organization grows.
- Develop and maintain appropriate financial controls and documentation.
- Assist leadership with financial modeling, strategic planning, and special projects as needed.
- Lead, mentor, and develop accounting staff as the organization continues to scale.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, including experience in a Controller or senior accounting leadership capacity.
- Strong understanding of GAAP and financial reporting.
- Experience with nonprofit accounting and/or healthcare accounting strongly preferred.
- Experience managing audits and working with external accounting firms.
- Strong knowledge of internal controls, reconciliations, and month-end close processes.
- Experience with budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow management.
- Strong Excel skills and experience working with accounting/ERP systems.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
- Ability to operate both strategically and hands-on in a growing organization.
- CPA or nonprofit accounting experience is a plus.

Pay
$120,000 - $140,000 per year
