About the Role
This temporary-to-permanent Controller position provides financial oversight, reporting, and compliance leadership for a non-profit organization. The role involves day-to-day accounting, strategic financial analysis, team leadership, and special projects focused on process improvement and operational innovation.
Responsibilities
- Financial Oversight, Reporting, and Compliance
- Leads the management of all core accounting functions, including disbursements, receipts, payroll processing, and reconciliations.
- Oversees and participates in the fiscal closing process, including general ledger account analyses, journal entries, and adjustments.
- Serves as the primary administrator and power user for the Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT accounting system.
- Actively manages cash flow, forecasts disbursements, and directs follow-up on delinquent collections and outstanding donor pledges.
- Produces accurate monthly internal financial statements.
- Ensures timely vendor payments and oversees reporting compliance for government agencies, foundations, national affiliations, and other funding partners.
- Directs workflow and communications with external auditors to ensure compliance with deadlines and filings (OMB Uniform Guidance, Form 5500, Form 990, etc.).
- Prepares key schedules for and assists in the preparation of the annual Form 990 and Annual Financials.
- Coordinates corrective action plans with process owners to address any findings or recommendations from annual audits.
- Monitors and updates the organization's Finance Policies & Procedures Manual as needed.
- Program Support and Analysis
- Collaborates with the VP of Financial Planning & Analysis to produce financial reports for Finance Committee analysis, board reporting, and executive decision-making.
- Liaises with program Vice Presidents to evaluate the financial impact of departmental services, identifying potential opportunities and risks.
- Team Leadership and Special Projects
- Manages and mentors a team of staff accountants and accounts payable specialists.
- Partners with the CFO to set the strategic and tactical direction of financial processes, workflows, and cross-departmental communications.
- Leads organization-wide projects focused on process improvement, automation, and operational innovation at the direction of the CFO.
