About the role

The Marcus Jewish Community Center is a multi-faceted nonprofit with approximately $40 million in annual revenue, delivering programs across mission areas. The finance team plays a critical role in sustaining mission impact through rigorous stewardship of public and private resources.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee accounting functions including accounts payable, accounts receivable, and general ledger maintenance.
  • Lead the monthly and year-end close processes, ensuring accuracy and timeliness of general ledger entries as well as key account reconciliations.
  • Prepare internal financial statements, provide budget variance analyses and management reports as needed.
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP, FASB standards applicable to nonprofit organizations, and internal policies.
  • Own daily banking function including reconciliations, cash management, and planning.
  • Oversee accounts receivable insuring that collections are timely.
  • Manage accounting for restricted activity, ensuring expenses are properly allocated and restrictions are honored.
  • Audit & Compliance: Lead the annual financial audit as well as 403(b) audit to flawless outcome. Serve as primary liaison with external auditors; prepare audit schedules and provide PBC items. Coordinate & oversee timely compliance with federal and state reporting requirements, including Forms 5500 and sales and excise tax returns. Oversee internal controls and recommend improvements to policies and procedures.
  • Budgeting & Forecasting: Support the CFO/CAO and Director of Finance on the annual budget process. Prepare monthly cash flow projections integrating financial forecasts. Provide financial analysis to support strategic and operational decision-making.
  • Team Leadership: Directly supervise and develop a team of four staff, including Accountants, Accounts Receivable and Accounts Payable specialists. Leverage strengths of the current finance team members, help to clarify roles and responsibilities and develop and implement training programs in order to maximize and reach optimal individual and organizational goals. Set clear expectations, provide regular feedback, and support professional development. Work closely with the Director of Finance on financial reporting, planning, compliance, and strategic finance priorities. Build and maintain strong working relationships with department directors across the organization, serving as a knowledgeable and approachable finance resource. Foster a collaborative, solutions-oriented culture within the finance function.
  • Systems & Process Improvement: Serve as a key administrator of the accounting system (e.g., Sage Intacct) as well as main accounting contact for CRM. Identify and implement process improvements to increase efficiency, accuracy, and scalability. Support technology upgrades, system integrations, and data integrity initiatives.

Qualifications

  • Required: Bachelor’s degree in accounting or a closely related field. CPA.
  • Demonstrated experience in nonprofit accounting and staff management.
  • Thorough knowledge of GAAP as applied to nonprofit organizations (ASC 958), including nonprofit financial statement presentation (statement of financial position, statement of activities, and statement of cash flows).
  • Proficiency with enterprise accounting software and advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
  • Exceptional organizational skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities, meet deadlines, and maintain accuracy in a fast-paced environment.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills, with a demonstrated ability to build trusted relationships with colleagues at all levels — from finance staff to department directors and senior leadership.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to translate complex financial information for non-financial audiences.
