About the Opportunity
This Controller role is ideal for a hands-on accounting leader who enjoys improving processes, implementing controls, driving automation, and building high-performing teams. The Controller will partner closely with executive leadership while transitioning responsibilities from an outsourced accounting model to an internal finance organization. The organization has a portfolio of 80+ properties, 100+ legal entities, and more than $500M in assets under management, investing heavily in its future growth and building the infrastructure needed to support a path beyond $1B in assets.
Responsibilities
- Lead all accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and month-end and year-end close processes.
- Oversee accounting and financial reporting for a complex multi-entity commercial real estate portfolio.
- Ensure accurate and timely financial reporting in accordance with GAAP.
- Manage budgeting, forecasting, cash flow, variance analysis, and financial compliance.
- Oversee CAM reconciliations, tenant billings, lease-related accounting activities, and property-level financial performance.
- Optimize and enhance accounting systems, including Rent Manager and QuickBooks.
- Develop internal controls, accounting policies, and scalable financial procedures.
- Support acquisitions, dispositions, and strategic growth initiatives.
- Hire, mentor, and develop future accounting and property accounting staff.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
- CPA
- 5-10+ years of progressive accounting experience (public, private, or a combination of both) within commercial real estate
- Experience managing multiple entities, properties, and complex legal structures
- Strong understanding of GAAP and real estate financial reporting
- Advanced Excel skills
- Hands-on experience with Rent Manager and QuickBooks or similar ERPs
- Proven process improvement and leadership experience
- Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills
