Control & Instrumentation Engineer

Key Responsibilities

  • Work on a team of experienced EnergyX engineers on projects focused on disruptive materials and engineering systems to fundamentally transform scientific aspects of the energy industry including:
    • Design And Development
      • Design and build E&I and control systems, including panel wiring, PLC programming, HMI development, and SCADA development and integration.
      • Create and review P&IDs (Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams) and control schematics.
      • Develop data visualization from MySQL databases in platforms such as Ignition, Grafana, or similar.
    • Testing And Commissioning
      • Conduct factory acceptance tests (FAT) and site acceptance tests (SAT) for control systems.
      • Integrate control systems with existing infrastructure and ensure seamless operation.
      • Perform commissioning electrical work including sensor addition, sensor validation, and motor wiring.
      • Perform general system commissioning, calibration, and troubleshooting.
    • Project Management
      • Prepare project documentation, including control narratives, functional specifications, and user manuals.
    • Compliance and Standards
      • Ensure all instrumentation and control designs comply with industry standards and safety regulations.
      • Stay updated with the latest advancements in control technology and best practices.

    Requirements

    • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or a related field.
    • Minimum of 5 years of experience in instrumentation and control engineering, in an industrial setting.
    • Proficiency in PLC programming (e.g., Siemens, Allen-Bradley, OPTO22, Schneider, or Mitsubishi).
    • Strong understanding of process instrumentation, control theory, and automation systems.
    • Experience with Ignition software including server commissioning, PLC communication, tag historian, and HMI design.
    • Experience with OPC UA and/or Modbus communication protocols.
    • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
    • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
    • 25% travel is required.

    Certifications

    • NFPA 70E electrical training is required.

    Preferred Requirements

    • Experience with DCS (Distributed Control Systems) and advanced control strategies.
    • Familiarity with Linux based server commissioning.
    • Knowledge of cybersecurity practices for industrial control systems.
    • Familiarity with industry standards such as ISA, IEC, and NFPA.
    • Experience with programming languages such as Python, C++, or MATLAB for control applications.
    • Certification in control systems or instrumentation (e.g., ISA Certified Control Systems Technician) is a plus.
