Control Engineer-Chillers
Mitsubishi Heavy Industries America, Inc. (MHIA) has been delivering innovative, integrated solutions for over 130 years across commercial aviation, energy, transportation, infrastructure, machinery, defense, and space systems. The company’s culture embraces diversity, cooperation, and a healthy balance of professional and personal development, valuing each employee’s ideas and expertise.
Scope
The Control Engineer (Chiller) is responsible for control system engineering of centrifugal chiller and Modular Chiller Plant (MCP) products. The role includes control‑logic development and review, interface definition, and coordination with internal teams, suppliers, and customers. It supports advanced cooling solutions for data‑center applications in North America, aligning system architecture across mechanical, electrical, and control domains, and contributing throughout the full product lifecycle—from concept development and technical proposal support to detailed design, testing, commissioning, and ongoing optimization. The position also collaborates with global stakeholders in Japan and the U.S. to advance next‑generation products.
Responsibilities
- Design and develop control logic for centrifugal chiller and MCP systems, ensuring performance, reliability, and scalability.
- Define system architecture and control strategies, including temperature, flow, and energy‑optimization controls.
- Design and validate control interfaces between chillers, auxiliary equipment (pumps, valves), and supervisory systems (BMS/DCIM).
- Support development of advanced controls such as automation, optimization, and future digital integration.
- Own design calculations and analysis packages (load flow, short‑circuit, protection coordination, arc‑flash, harmonics, transients/dynamic performance) and maintain traceability to requirements.
- Define interface requirements and responsibility boundaries among internal teams, customers, and suppliers; ensure alignment of control systems with mechanical and electrical configurations.
- Coordinate system integration across multiple vendors and subsystems; support troubleshooting and issue resolution related to control‑system performance.
- Translate customer requirements into clear control‑system specifications and functional requirements; act as technical interface with customers, partners, and suppliers during pre‑ and post‑award phases.
- Respond to technical inquiries and drive alignment on system functionality and interfaces; support evaluation and selection of control‑system suppliers and components.
- Support proposal development by defining control‑system scope, assumptions, and technical solutions; ensure alignment on scope, schedule, and deliverables across stakeholders.
- Participate in testing, commissioning, and site validation activities as needed.
- Support continuous improvement of engineering processes and standardization.
- Contribute to development of next‑generation cooling products, including MCP and modularized systems; identify opportunities for performance improvement, cost reduction, and enhanced functionality.
- Monitor market trends and emerging technologies in control systems, data‑center cooling, and automation.
- Lead vendor design reviews and manage deviation/issue closure through corrective actions and design improvements.
Minimum Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, control engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related engineering field.
- At least seven (7) years of experience in control‑system design or engineering for HVAC, centrifugal chiller (TRANE or JCI), or industrial systems.
- Strong understanding of control logic, PLC/DDC systems, and industrial automation.
- Experience with system integration and interface definition across multiple disciplines.
- Ability to read and develop control diagrams, sequences of operation, and functional specifications.
- Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills.
- Effective communication skills with customers, suppliers, and multidisciplinary teams.
- Willingness to travel domestically and internationally as required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in electrical engineering, control engineering, or mechanical engineering.
- Ten (10) or more years of experience in control‑system engineering for HVAC, chiller, or industrial systems.
- Proven track record developing innovative control solutions or products and bringing them to market.
- Demonstrated project‑management experience, including customer interface, support, testing, and commissioning.
Working Conditions
- Travel: approximately 25 % of time, including domestic and international trips.
