About the role

This is a hybrid role, field-based at customer locations in Grand Rapids, MI, encompassing project management, field technician work, and some design/engineering. The HVAC Controls Project Specialist is responsible for the commissioning, diagnosis, and repair of environmental-control systems, utilizing knowledge of electronics, direct digital control, airflow, hydronics, refrigeration theory, and control techniques. This role may also involve hardware and software design activities for small building automation systems, using engineering principles and practices for assigned projects.

Responsibilities include managing small or fast-track controls projects with strategic value, financial oversight (scope, schedule, budget), and coordination of multiple vendors and subcontractors.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct end-to-end testing, programming downloads, start-up, commissioning, and servicing on assigned projects.
  • Plan and analyze projects, establish schedules, and set procedures for complex contracting applications.
  • Communicate with customers, building owners, mechanical contractors, subcontractors, and field support staff.
  • Review contracts and estimates, perform risk analysis, and develop risk plans.
  • Create, revise, and manage project schedules and maintain project budgets.
  • Prepare sub-contractor request for quotations (RFQs), including scope statements, plans, milestone dates, specs, bonding requirements, and billing schedules.
  • Qualify subcontractor proposals and supervise project staff, subcontractors, and installers.
  • Manage project cash-flow: forecasting, progress billing, collections, and resource management.
  • Maintain customer satisfaction by investigating concerns, implementing corrective actions, and communicating with customers and staff.
  • Handle change order management: recommend solutions, facilitate quotes, and close orders.
  • Record parts, material, labor, and other cost data; document work via paperwork and maintain files.

Requirements

  • HVAC Controls technical expertise equivalent to a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or Technology and three (3) years of HVAC controls experience.
  • Valid driver’s license for a minimum of 12 months, with no major or frequent traffic violations (e.g., DUI, Hit & Run, License Suspension, Reckless/Careless Driving, or multiple smaller infractions/preventable collisions in the previous 3 years).
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently with limited supervision.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Experience working directly with building owners and contractors; excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Additional Requirements and Environmental Exposure

  • Must safely and legally operate a vehicle using a seat belt.
  • Ability to wear helmets, safety goggles, fall protection harnesses, and safety boots.
  • Physical requirements:
    • Twist the trunk of the body 90 degrees in each direction.
    • Squat and touch the floor with both hands.
    • Reach hands over the head.
    • Stand on concrete surfaces for extended periods (routinely up to 4 hours).
    • Regularly lift and/or move up to 10 lbs., frequently up to 40 lbs., and occasionally more than 40 lbs.
    • Safely use a ladder with a 350 lb. total weight limit while carrying equipment of 50 lbs. or less.
    • Maneuver confined access areas as small as 30” vertical x 45” horizontal.
    • Routinely access rooftops with extension/fixed ladders at heights of 15’ to 20’, and occasionally up to 50 feet or more.
  • Travel locally within the state; some overnight stays may be required.
  • Exposure to variable weather conditions, moving mechanical parts, heights, and other environmental conditions during site visits.

Pay

Hourly base pay range: $23.80 - $43.85. Compensation is tailored to factors such as seniority, merit, geographic location, education, experience, travel requirements, and union designation.
