Continuing Education Facilitator, Youth In-Person

About the role

RISD Continuing Education facilitators teach and provide feedback to promote and direct student learning and guide students with empathy. The program emphasizes design thinking, communicating, and creating, and students look to facilitators for guidance while navigating daily prompts and assignments. Facilitators lead students through engaging and inspiring activities designed to grow their confidence in art making, support students as they develop art and design vocabulary by talking about their work and the work of others, and provide personalized feedback as they work and during informal presentations of their finished pieces.

This position is for co-facilitating Museum Marvels, a full-day studio course held in person on the RISD campus for youth ages 10–12. The week-long course includes five days of art making with three guided visits to the RISD Museum. At the museum, students discover stories about history and culture by analyzing artworks, imagine distant places or times through landscape-inspired pieces, and ponder how artists depict people and characters in drawings, sculptures, and photographs. Gallery tours include written activities and opportunities to ask questions. Back in the studio, students apply ideas and techniques from the tours to create inspired works of art. The week concludes with a mini exhibition where students share their work with friends and family.

Learner outcomes:

  • Inspect art and design objects for clues about how they were made and what the artist is communicating.
  • Create works of art that include landscapes, portraits, and a story.
  • Practice techniques to show depth and realism when depicting scenes and people.
  • Use art and design vocabulary.
  • Build confidence by working collaboratively and independently.
