About the role

The Police Athletic League (PAL) of New York City is an independent youth development nonprofit organization founded in 1914. PAL serves as a vital bridge between police and communities across all five boroughs, offering diverse programs for children from 2 years old to young adults. These programs include Head Start, after-school programs, summer day camps, evening teen centers, and college readiness programs. Responsibilities

  • Foster social and emotional competencies and mental and physical well-being in a safe, welcoming, inclusive, and nurturing environment.
  • Learn and implement PAL-supplied curricula and turnkey training experiences to support frontline staff in the effective implementation of program activities.
  • Provide professional development to frontline staff in classroom management, behavior management, activity implementation, and facilitation during orientations, weekly staff meetings, and midseason trainings.
  • Observe and evaluate program implementation and provide staff with feedback and coaching.
  • Aware of students with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and support Group Leaders and Activity Specialists in their implementation of support plans and the writing of logs.
  • Ensure the program is aligned with PAL’s strategic objectives, policies, and procedures, as well as SACC regulations and contractual obligations of government and private funding sources.
  • Develop a strong youth development culture within the center, ensuring voice, growth, and advancement for all youth and staff.
  • Coordinate with the Principal, Director, Regional Director, SYEP Director, and Headquarters staff to grow creative programming opportunities unique to the center.
  • Collect program data, analyze it, and drive PAL forward with data-driven recommendations.
  • Provide mediation and troubleshoot issues.

Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college in Child Development, Education, Youth Development, or a related field is required. A master’s degree is preferred.
  • A minimum of 2 years of demonstrated successful experience in curriculum development and/or implementation, observation, training, and coaching, classroom teaching, and supervision.
  • Open to learning and growing, integrating mental health, SEL, and special needs inclusion skills into programming.
  • Available for training opportunities outside of program hours.
  • Microsoft Office skills are required.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and ability to work collaboratively.
  • Bi-lingual in Spanish, French, or Chinese preferred.
  • Demonstrated skills in program planning, implementation, evaluation, and project-based learning.
  • Able to travel to any PAL location in the 5 Boroughs (for Professional Development days).
