Consumer Loan Officer
About the role
Underwriters deliver outstanding service to both internal and external clients. A key internal element is serving as a reference source for the entire Consumer Lending Department. Externally, the role ensures each employee identifies members' financial needs and suggests proper Credit Union solutions. This position establishes and maintains positive working relationships with indirect dealer partners to support Arkansas Federal Credit Union's lending policies while balancing risk and reward to minimize liability and directly impact the overall financial performance of consumer and indirect loan portfolios.
Responsibilities
- Underwrite direct and indirect consumer loans, including collateralized auto loans and unsecured merchant (point of sale) loans in a safe and sound manner while maintaining a high level of member and dealer service.
- Establish and manage relationships with automobile dealers, promoting Arkansas Federal Credit Union's indirect programs to meet forecasted loan origination and revenue goals. Dealers may initiate contact at various hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays, requiring immediate responses to maintain meaningful relationships.
- Work many weekends and most Credit Union holidays (MLK Day, President's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, and Veteran's Day).
- Assist in reviewing and revising the Consumer Loan Department's policies and procedures to ensure accuracy and compliance.
- Monitor local and nationwide indirect lending trends and competitive rates/offerings; make recommendations and work with management to modify existing finance programs to maintain a competitive posture.
- Review charge-off/delinquency reports to maintain consistency and improve loan decisions.
- Understand, interpret, and adhere to lending regulations as they pertain to indirect and consumer loans; communicate compliance information to proper channels.
- Contribute to department sales and service goals; review loan origination and revenue activity reports for all relationships and take corrective action if ratios or revenues fall below budgeted forecasts.
- Maintain loan-to-share, delinquency, and charge-off ratios within Arkansas Federal Credit Union guidelines.
- Maintain a relationship with the Processing Department to resolve funding, document, or charge-back issues with dealers.
- Work special sales promotions, often requiring hours outside typical business operations.
- Participate in community activities and organizations as a representative of Arkansas Federal Credit Union.
- Underwrite member loans and determine creditworthiness within loan exception authority levels established by management.
- Underwrite employee and Credit Union officials' consumer loan applications within established guidelines; recommend exceptions to the Employee Loan Review Committee.
- Provide the Supervisory Committee, Certified Public Accountants, and federal examiners with information on lending procedures and ensure needed information is available.
- Maintain a professional work environment while providing exceptional service to every dealer or member.
- Ensure understanding of the Credit Union's history, philosophy, organization, bylaws, and operational procedures.
- Advise internal and external partners assisting members with complex or "exceptional" problems requiring special knowledge or authority.
- Contribute to the development of loan training curriculum alongside the Organizational Development team; provide on-site lending training for internal and external partners.
- Advise leadership of unusual complaints, calls, and letters received.
- Contribute toward back-end loan product goals and additional cross-selling opportunities.
- Perform any other related duties as required or assigned.
Requirements
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
- High school diploma or GED, plus specialized schooling and/or on-the-job education in a specific skill area (e.g., data processing, clerical/administrative, equipment operation).
- Three years of related experience and/or training, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
