Consumer Benefits Specialist
Salary Range: $14.07 - $15.28 Hourly
About the role
This position assists consumers in applying for federal and/or state benefits by adhering to complicated policies and procedures. Responsibilities include completing disability reviews, answering inquiries regarding federal and/or state benefits, interviewing, verifying and documenting case data, filing appeals in a timely manner, and providing required information/documentation to both internal and external entities when required.
This position acts as a representative for consumers to external agencies such as the Social Security Administration and the Division for Disability Determination Services (DDS). It requires timely intervention and frequent face-to-face contact with consumers, families, and outside agencies. The role involves quickly identifying problems or areas of need, acting professionally in stressful situations, and interpreting and thoroughly completing federal and/or state forms and documentation. This position ensures that consumers' rights are respected and observed at all times.
Periodic travel related to work assignments and training is required. The position is responsible for applying for SSI, SSDI, QMB, SLMB, and Medicaid, and requires education and knowledge in the Medicare Prescription Drug Coverage/Part D plan. It also involves assisting all eligible clients to access their individualized prescription drug plan and working collaboratively with other Betty Hardwick Center departments and outside agencies in a respectful, professional, and knowledgeable manner.
Responsibilities
- Assist consumers in applying for federal and/or state benefits.
- Complete disability reviews and answer inquiries regarding benefits.
- Interview, verify, and document case data.
- File appeals in a timely manner.
- Provide required information/documentation to internal and external entities.
- Act as a representative for consumers to external agencies (e.g., Social Security Administration, DDS).
- Ensure consumers' rights are respected and observed.
- Apply for SSI, SSDI, QMB, SLMB, and Medicaid.
- Assist eligible clients with their individualized Medicare Prescription Drug Coverage/Part D plan.
- Collaborate with other departments and outside agencies.
- Travel periodically for work assignments and training.
Requirements
- High school diploma.
- Six months of experience in the field of consumer benefits (some college may substitute for experience; a four-year degree is preferred).
- Extensive experience with consumers and center procedures may substitute for education.
- Proficiency in word processing, spreadsheet, and database software programs.
- Knowledge of general office procedures and equipment (e.g., copiers, fax machines, scanners).
- Current Texas driver’s license, insurable driving record, and qualification for Center coverage.
- Ability to work under minimal supervision with latitude for initiative and independent judgment.
Schedule
Full-time, Monday - Friday, 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM (flexible).
