Leidos’ Undersea Systems Division is seeking a Senior Optical Systems Engineer to join a funded Government-Industry-Lab team. The role focuses on establishing the feasibility of an optical laser communication system configured for communication through the air-water interface, using underwater and airborne hosts.

Responsibilities

  • Direct the architecture, development, and sustainment of mission-critical sensor recording systems across multiple concurrent projects.
  • Collaborate with the team to identify embedded firmware and software requirements and evaluate design approaches for solving complex technical problems.
  • Review the current state of the recording system codebase, assess changes, and prioritize next steps for development.
  • Identify and resolve code quality issues to establish a stable baseline for ongoing development.
  • Set up the recording system build in a CI pipeline to enable automated builds and reduce manual integration risk.
  • Begin active development on the recording system, addressing priority tasks based on project needs.
  • Provide technical guidance to the development team on recording system architecture and best practices.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizen with the ability to obtain a SECRET security clearance.
  • Experience with the Leidos Pulse Propagation Model (PPM) design, legacy MATLAB codebase, and operation.
  • Extensive experience with optical (blue-green) transmitters and receivers, including development of integrated transceiver payloads and integration/testing with host platforms.
  • Ability to read, understand, and interpret complex technical documents.
  • Strong oral and visual communication skills for conveying complex ideas.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 40+ years of experience in the development and application of technologies, design, integration, test, and production of systems.
  • Career progression demonstrating increasing responsibility, leadership, and accountability for complex technical and system challenges.
