Construction Technician
About the role
The South Dakota Department of Transportation (SDDOT) seeks a Construction Technician to join a dynamic team focused on providing innovative and impactful solutions in construction inspection, paving, and bridge construction.
Responsibilities
- Inspecting, testing, and sampling: Portland cement concrete material, asphalt concrete materials, gravel and soil materials;
- Inspecting bridges, box culverts, and pipe culverts;
- Performing field surveys;
- Inspecting temporary traffic control through and around work zones;
- Completing various records and reports.
Requirements
- A typical 40-hour work week, Monday through Friday, mid-November through March;
- Longer hours during construction season to comply with Federal Highway requirements;
- Some weekend hours from April through mid-November.
Qualifications
- Classes and training for certification requirements are provided through SDDOT;
- Certification in materials testing areas (asphalt, concrete, gravel);
- Certification in inspection areas;
- Valid driver's license.
Skills
- Knowledge of civil engineering techniques (preferred but not required);
- Elementary physical, mechanical, and earth science principles (preferred but not required);
- Variety of engineering survey equipment (preferred but not required).

- Safely move, drag, and lift 35 pounds frequently, up to 60 pounds occasionally (without assistance), and 90 or more pounds infrequently (with assistance);
- Walk, sit, and stand for extended periods of time;
- Routinely reach, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.

Pay
The total compensation of Hourly Wage + State/Federal Benefits for a typical year for entry level Construction Technician is approximately $67,003.00 annually.
Schedule
This position has a typical 40-hour work week, Monday through Friday, mid-November through March. Longer hours will generally occur during construction season to be compliant with Federal Highway requirements. This may include some weekend hours from April through mid-November.
Compensation
The total compensation of Hourly Wage + State/Federal Benefits for a typical year for entry level Construction Technician is approximately $67,003.00 annually. This position is eligible for Veterans’ Preference per ARSD 55:10:02:08.
