Construction Superintendent(Travelling)

About the Role

The Construction Site Superintendent oversees the operations of a construction site, from planning to completion. Responsible for the performance of all subcontractors, ensuring that projects are completed on time and within budget. Promote, execute, and adhere to the company’s safety program, and encourage all employees and subcontractors to adopt safety as a culture.

Responsibilities

• Project Oversight:
  • Assume complete responsibility for project construction ensuring safe, high-quality, timely, and cost-effective execution with minimal guidance from senior leadership.
  • Function as the sole Design Group job-site superintendent.
  • Impart knowledge of construction principles, including forming and placing concrete, process piping, crane operations, structural steel erection, cladding installation, roofing, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, interior finishes, and manufacturing equipment installation.
  • Demonstrate expertise in materials, tools, equipment, industrial building codes, safety regulations, and industry standards.
  • Read and interpret construction plans; update redline drawings in real time and ensure subcontractors do the same.
  • Navigate and learn new construction management software efficiently.
  • Manage the inspection process from progress inspection to Certificate of Occupancy.
• Preconstruction:
  • Actively participate in developing the construction schedule, including phasing, critical path, and long-lead procurement.
  • Create site logistics plans (trailer location, material storage, access points, gates, safety requirements, signage, temporary utilities).
  • Review and provide feedback to ensure the budget is set up correctly for Site General Requirements.
  • Provide technical expertise and constructability review throughout pre-construction, including reviewing plans, specifications, and advising on issues or deficiencies.
  • Generate an internal RFI log of issues.
• Buyout/Scope of Work:
  • Support the preconstruction team with writing and reviewing scopes of work per divisional breakout.
  • Understand subcontractor and supplier contract scopes.
  • Participate in trade partner interviews and assess their ability to meet the project schedule.
• Safety:
  • Review and identify all high-risk activities, ensuring proper planning and approvals before work begins.
  • Review subcontractor safety plans and ensure high-risk mitigation measures are in place.
  • Set an example for site safety and manage subcontractors to ensure compliance with Design Group’s HSEQ guidelines, OSHA, USACE EM385.1-1, and local site safety requirements.
  • Ensure full site compliance from a safety standpoint (signage, orientations, cleanliness, safe work practices).
  • Ensure all project safety documentation and permits are available and utilized.
  • Perform Safety Manager responsibilities on smaller jobs without a full-time Safety Manager.
  • Create agendas and present weekly site-wide safety meetings with documented participation.
  • Lead on-site safety meetings and toolbox talks.
• Schedule:
  • Lead the development of the project schedule in close association with the project team.
  • Manage and coordinate subcontractor work to ensure adherence to project schedule dates, milestones, sequencing, and durations.
  • Update construction schedule activities weekly in conjunction with Project Controls, including a 3-week look-ahead.
  • Manage weekly work against the agreed/vetted weekly work plan.
  • Lead Pull Plan Sessions and implement the Last Planner System.
• Permits/Inspections/Daily Logs:
  • Manage all JHA inspections, coordinate with inspectors, and walk through inspections.
  • Maintain daily paperwork, including Procore daily reports, schedule updates, system correspondence, jobsite photos, and project safety inspections.
• Subcontractor and Site Management:
  • Provide leadership to establish and maintain effective working relationships with clients, Design Group team members, and subcontractors.
  • Participate in regular update meetings with off-site Project Managers and upper management.
  • Lead subcontractor foreman meetings and daily huddles, confirming activities against the current day’s work plan.
  • Direct all work with subcontractors and ensure compliance with project schedule production and duration.
  • Conduct subcontractor start-up meetings and lead coordination meetings.
  • Ensure full understanding of subcontractor scope responsibilities for contract compliance.
  • Track material/equipment deliveries and subcontractor start dates.
• Quality:
  • Ensure full understanding of subcontractor scope of work as outlined in subcontracts, complete drawings, and specifications.
  • Maintain full grasp of all RFI changes, their status, approval, and priority, ensuring implemented changes are reflected in the project.
  • Understand all bulletins/design changes, their status, and ensure implementation in the project.
  • Ensure all work is completed per plans and specifications and installed per approved submittals.
  • Review shop drawings for compliance with design documents.
  • Manage pre-install meetings with support from the Project Manager/Project Engineer.
  • Establish punch-list processes and close-out procedures with the off-site Project Manager before work commences.
  • Ensure punch list corrections are completed and obtain owner sign-off.
  • Ensure trade partners utilize the most up-to-date contract documents.
• RFIs:
  • Support the Project Engineering team in resolving RFI issues, especially those related to constructability.
• Facility Commissioning:
  • Lead or support installation, start-up, testing, commissioning, and turnover of facility mechanical and electrical equipment.
• Financial:
  • Support the review of monthly owner pay applications to confirm subcontractor work in place matches billing amounts.
• Mentoring:
  • Responsible, with the Project Manager, for mentoring construction Project Engineers and interns.
• Communication:
  • Establish clear communication channels and display a professional demeanor to foster positive relationships with local communities.
  • Build solid working relationships with client leadership, plant personnel, inspectors, city/county officials, and subcontractors.
  • Collaborate with Project Safety Manager, Project Manager, Quality Control, and Architecture & Engineering design teams.
  • Motivate others, use professional negotiation and conflict resolution skills to enforce contracts and drive successful outcomes.
  • Conduct all business ethically to serve the customer and enhance Design Group’s reputation.
• Travel:
  • Travel to regional construction sites, which may require temporary lodging for extended periods.
  • Work shifts may include nights, weekends, and holidays.

Requirements

• A minimum of ten years of experience as a construction site superintendent on industrial projects.
• Recent experience working on construction projects involving industrial facilities and structures (e.g., Cold Storage Distribution Centers, Food & Beverage Processing, Packaging & Distribution Centers, Life Science and Advanced Technology Manufacturing Facilities, Industrial Tilt Wall Distribution Centers, ASRS Robotics Distribution Centers, Data Centers, Clean Room/Dry Room Construction, MEP-driven projects).
• A record of successful completion of industrial projects valued from $500K to $100M.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, Project), Procore, Bluebeam, and CAD.
• Experience working within active operating manufacturing facilities (preferred).
• OSHA 30 certification.
• A willingness to travel for extended periods for project requirements, including installation, start-up activities, client/company meetings, trainings, and industry events (work shifts may include nights, weekends, and holidays).
• A bachelor’s degree in engineering, architecture, construction management, or a related technical field, or equivalent experience as a construction site superintendent for large industrial or manufacturing structures.
