About the role

The Project Engineer - Construction will assist in management of construction activities and skilled, technical, and professional staff engaged in construction of process facilities, surface infrastructure, roads, dams, water treatment plants, power infrastructure, maintenance and administrative buildings, and all other onsite and offsite infrastructure.

  • Responsible for active management of multiple contractors and subcontractors including: planning, scheduling, reporting, health, safety, security, environmental compliance, quality, community relations and meeting targets within budget and on time.
  • Ensures that work is always executed in a safe manner.
  • Ensures that S32 corporate safety and business goals are met or exceeded.
  • Ensures that project construction activities and services are executed in conformity with S32’s environmental policies and plans.
  • Ensures that project construction activities and services are executed in conformity with S32’s community relations policies and plans.
  • Aid in the preparation of Sourcing Strategies for major works packages as required.
  • Aid in the preparation of annual budgets with input and assistance from the Project Controls Team.
  • Review project construction schedules.
  • Aid in timely submission of contractor progress and cost status reports to the Project Controls Team.
  • Aid in implementation of remedial recovery action as required.
  • Ensure strict compliance with S32 Change Management processes.
  • Achieve timely delivery of project construction services to internal stakeholders.
  • Coordinate construction contractor risk assessments with input and assistance from the S32 Risk Specialist, S32 Engineering Department, Consultants, internal stakeholders and the S32 Construction Team.
  • Achieve proper resourcing of S32 Virtual Design and Construction initiatives and ensure work is executed in accordance with applicable S32 technology objectives.
  • Maintain monitoring of VDC and BXP technology objectives utilizing the S32 approved VDC and BXP metrics.
  • Coordinate any work inputs from S32 Site Services.
  • Coordinate the construction engineering program, including the exchange of engineering information among S32, design engineer, and contractors to ensure effective communication and the addressing and tracking of needs, requirements, and issues.
  • Work with Project Services to ensure that equipment and material deliveries are coordinated and ensure that Care & Preservation requirements are correctly implemented and documented.
  • Prepare and revise technical work procedures consistent with project design and construction requirements.
  • Participate in pre-construction planning efforts during the design and development phases of projects, including the coordination and implementation of the constructability review program, HAZOPs, and development of commissioning program.
  • Analyze situations, identify and forecast pertinent problems and evaluate realistic options; and recommend/implement appropriate course of action.
  • Manage the issue of equipment and bulk materials to Contractors.
  • Periodically reviews the Construction Management Execution Plan to ensure conformity with current requirements, and revise as required.
  • Organize and oversee the maintenance and safe, effective utilization of tools, equipment, supplies, and inventories.
  • Train, guide, and evaluate the performance of direct reports, making recommendations for improvement where required.
  • Aid in the compilation of construction documentation for upcoming work packages.
  • Identify contractor performance issues and work internal stakeholders to resolve issues.
  • Achieve compliance with applicable regulatory and building code requirements including Federal, State, and Local.
  • Achieve conformity with industry codes of practice and standards.
  • Participate in the S32 site Quality Circles initiative.
  • Achieve compliance with specified quality standards.
  • Assign, schedule, review, and evaluate work of subordinates.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Manager Project Execution and Construction.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or Technical Degree (Construction or Similar) and appropriate Trade qualifications.
  • Minimum 6 years of large-scale mining construction site management experience across all trades.
  • Experience coordinating engineering and vendor technical information.
  • Experience managing and coordinating both union and non-union craft labor.
  • Experience managing and coordinating project logistics.
  • Experience managing construction contracts and vendor services contracts.
  • Experience working with teams and interacting with customers.
  • Experience working in a cross-cultural setting.
  • Proven track record of developing and maintaining a safe work culture.
  • Demonstrated experience implementing Environmental Compliance obligations.
  • Visible field safety leadership and an ability to drive safety and performance excellence.
  • Knowledge of engineering, construction and trade practices.
  • Knowledge of project management methodologies and tools used to track cost, time and quality.
  • Knowledge of management concepts and best practices.
  • Strong and effective communication and engagement skills.
  • Relationship building skills: demonstrated empathy, rapport, emotional intelligence and cross-cultural effectiveness with the ability to achieve consensus and build alignment cooperatively.
  • Maintain high standards of professional and ethical conduct.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Strong English language written and oral communication skills.
