Construction Project Engineer

About the role

The Construction Project Engineer supports the Superintendent in the planning, coordination, and supervision of daily construction operations on construction and heavy highway projects. This position helps ensure work is performed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with project schedules, specifications, quality standards, and contract requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Field Operations
    • Aid the Superintendent in managing daily construction activities and project execution.
    • Coordinate labor, equipment, materials, and subcontractors to meet production goals.
    • Support planning and implementation of weekly and daily work plans.
    • Maintain a visible presence in the field to oversee operations and support crews.
    • Promote and enforce company safety policies and procedures.
    • Conduct daily safety briefings and toolbox talks.
    • Assist with jobsite safety inspections and audits.
    • Identify and correct unsafe conditions and behaviors.
    • Ensure compliance with OSHA, DOT, environmental, and company safety requirements.
    • Monitor workmanship and ensure compliance with project quality standards.
    • Review construction activities for conformance with plans and specifications.
    • Identify and address quality issues before they impact project performance.
    • Assist in project start up activities.
    • Assist with punch list completion and project closeout activities.
    • Assist in developing short-term and long-range construction schedules.
    • Track daily progress.
    • Coordinate deliveries, equipment utilization, and subcontractor activities.
    • Communicate schedule updates and constraints to the Superintendent and Project Manager.
    • Provide direction and support to Foremen, operators, laborers, and subcontractors.
    • Assist with workforce planning and crew assignments.
    • Promote teamwork, accountability, and professional development.
    • Address field issues promptly and professionally.
    • Complete daily timecards for crews when required.
    • Support project recordkeeping and document control requirements.
    • Communicate effectively with project owners, engineers, inspectors, and utility representatives.
    • Participate in project meetings and provide field updates.
    • Maintain professional relationships with clients and subcontractors.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Associate's or bachelor’s degree in construction management, Civil Engineering, or related field preferred.
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Knowledge of roadway, bridge, asphalt paving, grading, drainage, and utility construction preferred.
