About the role

Delta Utilities is seeking a Construction & Maintenance (C&M) Technician to perform field operations including manual labor and other duties necessary to accomplish the installation, repair, construction, and maintenance of natural gas distribution systems. This position can be filled at Level I, II, or III based on experience.

Responsibilities

  • Installs, repairs, or replaces steel and plastic pipe.
  • Provides First Responder assistance in emergency situations.
  • Locates gas lines.
  • Loads and unloads required equipment, tools, and supplies onto and from trucks.
  • Transports required equipment, tools, and supplies to work sites (C&M Tech II and above).
  • Trains and coaches less experienced crew members (C&M Tech III).
  • Assists with or leads work on site.
  • Assists with Plugging and Tapping procedures.
  • Assists in preparation of pipe for welding.
  • Operates heavy equipment such as backhoes, trenchers, and trucks (two-ton or larger).
  • Performs gas meter resets and relights.
  • Utilizes the company’s mapping system.
  • Completes required paperwork.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned, within the scope of responsibilities.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent knowledge of English, mathematics (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, and percentages), punctuation, grammar, and spelling.
  • Valid state driver’s license with a good driving record; ability to operate company vehicles safely and in compliance with laws and policies.
  • Ability to obtain a Class A CDL within the first 6 months of employment (Class D with CDL preferred).
  • Ability to obtain company plastic welding certification within 12 months and company Arc or Oxygen-Acetylene welding certification within 24 months (C&M Tech II and III must maintain these certifications).
  • Compliance with Department of Transportation (DOT) and Pipeline & Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) drug and alcohol regulations, including pre-employment drug testing and background screening.

Experience

  • C&M Tech I: No prior work experience required.
  • C&M Tech II: Minimum of two (2) years’ experience in construction, installation, and maintenance of gas distribution systems.
  • C&M Tech III: Minimum of four (4) years’ experience in construction, installation, and maintenance of gas distribution systems, including two years' experience welding (steel) pipe.

Physical Requirements

  • Able to operate a motor vehicle, including entering and exiting unassisted.
  • Able to perform on-site inspections.
  • Able to operate a personal computer, copy machine, fax, calculator, telephone, and other office equipment.
  • Able to sit for extended periods.
  • Able to exert up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally and/or minimal force frequently to lift, carry, push, or move objects.
  • Able to work in all weather conditions.
  • Able to handle emergency situations, including possible exposure to gaseous atmospheres.
  • Able to work regular hours with occasional overtime, rotating shifts (if required), and respond to emergency calls while off duty.
  • Able to wear and operate personal protective equipment (e.g., respirator, safety glasses, hardhat, gloves, protective footwear, earplugs) daily.
  • Able to be included in random drug screen pools required for DOT drivers and safety-sensitive positions.
  • May be required to remain in the service area during emergency events to assist in restoration efforts.
