About the role
Performs company field operations including manual labor and other duties necessary to accomplish the installation, repair, construction and maintenance of natural gas distribution systems.
Responsibilities
Installs, repairs or replaces steel and plastic pipe. Provides First Responder assistance in emergency situations. Locates gas lines. Loads and unloads required equipment, tools, and supplies onto and from truck. Performs other duties as assigned.
Additional responsibilities vary by level:
- C&M Tech II: Transports required equipment, tools and supplies to work site. Trains and coaches less experienced members of crew.
- C&M Tech III: Assists with or leads work on site.
Requirements
Requires a high school diploma or the equivalent knowledge of English, mathematics, punctuation, grammar and spelling.
Experience requirements vary by level:
- C&M Tech I: No prior work experience required.
- C&M Tech II: Minimum of two years experience in construction, installation and/or maintenance systems, with one year experience welding steel pipe. Must obtain Class A CDL and pass company welding certification within 90 days of employment.
- C&M Tech III: Minimum of four years experience in construction, installation and/or maintenance systems, with one year experience welding steel pipe. Must obtain Class A CDL and pass company welding certification within 90 days of employment.
Skills
Must be able to:
- Pass written portion of commercial driver’s license (CDL) test and attain complete CDL.
- Obtain company plastic welding certification and company Arc or Oxygen-Acetylene welding certification.
- Learn and perform gas meter resets and relights.
- Learn and utilize company’s mapping system.
- Learn and complete paperwork as required.
- Motivate self, accomplish tasks and achieve goals with minimal supervision.
- Apply knowledge of industry and company safety standards and regulations.
- Use proper tools for any given job.
- Assist with Plugging and Tapping procedures.
- Assist in preparation of pipe for welding.
- Learn and operate heavy equipment.
- Demonstrate an aptitude for basic mechanical tasks.
- Respond well to changing priorities.
- Solve problems with logical solutions.
- Demonstrate and utilize effective oral and written communications skills.
- Learn and use a Personal Computer, SAP and Mobile Data.
Physical Requirements
Must be able to:
- Exert in excess of 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a minimal amount of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
- Use a variety of hand tools and power tools.
- Operate a motor vehicle and heavy equipment.
- Operate a personal computer.
- Stand, walk, stoop, kneel or crouch for extended periods of time.
- Exert routine physical effort on a daily basis.
Working Conditions
Must be able to:
- Work on a daily basis in all types of weather conditions.
- Work regular hours, with occasional overtime.
- Handle emergency situations, including possible exposure to gaseous atmospheres on occasion.
- Work rotating shifts, if required.
- Respond to emergency calls and/or call-outs and occasionally return to work while off duty.
- Certify and don personal protective equipment on a daily basis.
