About the role

APAC-Kansas, Inc., Shears Construction, is a multi-million dollar heavy highway contractor established in 1874. Primary Responsibilities

  • Work as part of a collaborative team, supporting fellow employees and following management directions to achieve project goals.
  • Maintain a safe work environment by adhering to safety policies, guidelines, and regulations, including OSHA/MSHA standards, and using required tools and equipment.
  • Assist with construction and excavation activities, including treatment plants, water, sewer, and storm drain systems, performing tasks like shoveling, raking, wheelbarrow use, and pipe laying.
  • Operate small power tools such as jackhammers and heavy equipment used in utility and road projects, ensuring safe and efficient material handling.
  • Signal equipment operators to ensure safe and efficient material movement, maintaining constant visual and communicative contact with co-workers.
  • Conduct basic servicing and maintenance on equipment, reporting more serious issues to the Foreman.
  • Complete daily pre- and post-operation inspections of equipment, documenting findings according to company policies.
  • Lift, carry, and hold materials, tools, and supplies as required for job duties.
  • Aid in the placement, movement, and removal of traffic control devices such as signs, barricades, and cones.
  • Perform any additional duties as assigned by supervisors to support project success.

Work Requirements

  • Pass a pre-employment drug screening and criminal background check.
  • Successfully complete a pre-employment “Fit for Work” physical examination.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license with a clean driving record and complete safe driver training as required.
  • Willingness to travel and stay away from home when assigned.
  • Ability to provide necessary documentation to meet I-9 Immigration requirements.
  • Exhibit professionalism and courtesy in all interactions with co-workers, supervisors, and the public.
  • Report to work promptly at the designated start time and maintain reliable attendance.
  • Flexibility to work nights, weekends, and overtime.
  • Strictly adhere to all safety procedures and requirements as outlined in the Employee Handbook.
  • Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times in designated areas.
  • Exhibit a positive team spirit and assist others as needed to achieve overall team objectives.

Education & Experience

  • A high school diploma or GED is preferred.
  • Previous experience with excavation equipment or in construction-related roles is an asset.

Physical & Work Environment Requirements

  • Frequently required to climb, balance, and perform tasks involving physical agility.
  • Sit, climb, and use hand signals or equipment; occasionally stand, walk, crawl, kneel, bend, stoop, crouch, or reach above shoulder height.
  • Lift and move objects weighing up to 25-50 lbs as needed.
  • Work primarily outdoors, often in extreme weather and environmental conditions.
  • Comfortable working in all weather conditions; exposed to jobsite hazards such as moving machinery, high places, airborne particles, and loud environments.
  • Specific vision abilities, including close, distance, color, peripheral, and depth perception, are required to operate equipment safely.
