Responsibilities
- Perform a variety of physical tasks in the field as part of the essential job functions.
- Walking and navigating across rough or uneven terrain such as mud, rocks, grass, dirt, steep hillsides, heavily wooded areas, and other unpaved surfaces.
- Moving around active project sites, which may involve climbing ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, or poles.
- Remaining in a stationary position—either standing or sitting—for extended periods of time.
- Performing physical activities such as bending, twisting, kneeling, and climbing.
- Lifting objects weighing up to 50 pounds and/or carting objects up to 50 lbs distances up to 50 yards.
- Driving to and from project sites which may involve distances of up to or exceeding 75 miles round trip.
- Must be able to function safely in an environment with potential risks, including, but not limited to those described in this document.
- The work environment may include exposure to a range of environmental conditions, including high and low temperatures, precipitation, and other outdoor elements.
- Must be willing to work nights and overtime, when required by the project assignment.
Requirements
- A High School diploma or State Equivalency Certificate.
- A minimum of 1 year of relevant transportation experience.
- TET III – Mid level technician with 3 years of relevant transportation inspection experience in bridge and/or roadway construction with several accompanying certifications.
- TET IV – Senior level technician with 5 years of relevant transportation inspection experience in bridge and/or roadway construction with all accompanying certifications.
- TET V – Project Manager with 8 years of relevant transportation inspection experience in heavy highway, bridge and roadway construction with all accompanying certifications.
- Demonstrated construction inspection experience with assorted interstate, roadway, bridge, storm drainage, TMDL and building facility contracts involving MDOT SHA construction standards and specifications as well as experience with OOC construction inspection contract documentation including preparing Inspector Daily Reports (IDRs), Force Account Records, reconciling Contractor Monthly Invoicing and providing detailed weekly progress reports related to both project progress and budget.
- All applicable MARTCP certificates (based on contract assignment type).
- A current SHA Temporary Traffic Control Manager’s Training Course Card (or secure the same prior to work assignment).
- An MDE RPC Card and SHA E&S Yellow Card.
- Verification of satisfactory SHA OOC annual consultant inspector appraisals required.
- A valid driver’s license, good driving record and personal vehicle for travel to and from assigned construction sites.
- Good communication skills.
- The ability to read/interpret plans and specifications.
- The writing and drawing skills necessary to complete inspection reports and sketch books.
- Basic computer skills (Word & Excel) are desirable as well as experience with using computer laptops or field tablets for preparing electronic IDRs and photographic documentation.

Pay
The specific compensation offered to a candidate may vary based on factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s relevant knowledge, training, skills, work location, and/or experience. The expected hourly compensation range for this position is $20.00 - $70.00, which includes base pay plus variable incentive pay, if eligible.
Schedule
Must be willing to work nights and overtime, when required by the project assignment.
