Conservation Technician Student Assistant

About the role

The Conservation Technician is part of the Conservation and Preservation Department and reports to the Conservator. The primary responsibility is performing book repair, binding, housing construction, and conservation treatments on circulating library material. This position works closely with all staff in the Conservation Lab at the Smathers Libraries.

First-semester work focuses on making pamphlets for items needing hard covers. After one semester, duties expand to include additional repair and boxing techniques.

Responsibilities

  • Repair and house circulating collection materials.
  • Measure, cut, and glue paper and cloth binding materials accurately and safely.
  • Perform simple bindings and mends using needle and thread, scissors, knives, and other hand tools.

Requirements

  • Manual dexterity.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Reliable personal transportation to the off-campus facility.

Qualifications

  • Hand skills test required as part of the interview process.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Hand skills from a transferable art and/or craft.
  • Previous experience working in a library and/or museum.

Pay

$15.25 per hour.
