Conservation Corps Crew Member

About the role

Join the City of Green Bay to enhance the Green Bay Parks and Greenways through an AmeriCorps program. Conservation Corps members are responsible for restoration efforts.

Responsibilities

Conservation Corps members will be responsible for a variety of tasks, including:

• Trail maintenance (15%)
• Native plantings and maintenance (25%)
• Habitat restoration (25%)
• Volunteer and education outreach (10%)
• Training and job development (15%)
• Mapping and survey efforts (10%)

Examples of specific duties include maintaining and improving trail systems, assisting in construction projects, performing plant maintenance and installation work, and collecting native seeds.

Specific tasks may include:

• Maintaining, improving, and creating trail systems through grading, mulching, and vegetation removal
• Removing flooding debris near river trails when necessary
• Assisting in construction projects such as building/replacing boardwalks and/or building fences
• Completing plant maintenance and installation work including grading, seeding, watering, weeding, mulching, and trimming
• Planting trees, shrubs, and flowers
• Performing general greenhouse maintenance including planting, watering, thinning, and pesticide applications when necessary
• Collecting native seeds throughout park system
• Removing invasive species by cutting, hand pulling, and/or herbicide applications
• Mapping various habitats, invasive species, and trail systems
• Conducting vegetation and wildlife surveys
• Planning, organizing, and implementing community events to include volunteer days, days of service, and educational programming
• Keeping accurate daily records as instructed

Requirements

The successful candidate must be at least 17 years old and willing to work on crews comprised of people from different backgrounds in various environmental conditions.

A valid Wisconsin driver's license and good driving record are preferred.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have knowledge of park and trail maintenance practices and procedures, including equipment maintenance, as well as knowledge of safety practices related to general labor and equipment operation.

Skills and abilities should include:

• Skill and knowledge of cleaning and maintenance
• Skill and ability to operate and maintain Department equipment and tools
• Skill and ability to keep routine records
• Considerable ability in following oral directions
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
• Ability to work the required hours of the position
• Ability to work up to 10 hours per day for 5-6 consecutive days in outdoor locations

Physical Requirements

The successful candidate must be able to perform the following activities:

• Lifting and carrying up to 30 pounds
• Frequent walking, standing, bending, and lifting
• Ability to focus for long period of time on projects
• Ability to work in varied environmental conditions
