Computer Network Support Specialist

About the role
The Computer Network Support Specialist (Tier 1) will support our government client in Kansas City, MO, providing data center IT support in a 24x7x365 environment and second-tier support to end users for server, mainframe applications, or hardware. This role involves interacting with network services, software systems engineering, and/or application development to restore service and identify core problems.
Responsibilities
- Provide Tier II support.
- Perform Production Control duties using state-of-the-art scheduling packages.
- Perform System Administration duties in a mainframe and midrange environment.
- Manage and perform steps/actions required in the Remedy ticketing system.
- Maintain a high level of technical skill in your field of expertise.
- Perform and/or oversee security of the data center, including escorting personnel to designated areas.
- Complete daily logs and journals for computer room security, shift turnover, and daily activity notes.
- Support Disaster Recovery (DR) exercises.
- Ensure customer satisfaction through issue and problem resolution.
- Report, document, and escalate customer contacts regarding issues or problems.
- Perform research and analysis on administrative and program-related IT issues.
- Determine pertinent issues and collect relevant information from various sources.
- Develop and present recommendations for changes and solutions to programs or procedures.
- Plan and coordinate maintenance and upgrades for NITC Infrastructure and customers.
- Optimize network and system functionality, reallocating system resources as needed.
- Diagnose and recover failed systems and applications, individually or with assistance.
- Perform research to develop useful business requirements.
- Execute and modify jobs/programs using multiple scheduling packages.
- Perform Computer Operations functions such as system IPLs/reboots, backups, configuration modifications, troubleshooting failures, recycling applications, and production scheduling.
- Research and resolve environmental and facilities power issues within prescribed timeframes.
- Complete logs required during daily security checks.
- Participate in quarterly training on manually starting generators and switching PDUs from loss power sources.
- Demonstrate skills critical to maintaining stable infrastructure and customer access.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in a computer science field or an Associate’s degree in a technology field and 2+ years’ experience in a similar position.
- 5+ years’ experience in a data center support-related field.
- Ability to perform system administration for Linux, Windows, and Mainframe systems.
- Knowledge of networks, switches, and other peripherals.
- Knowledge of storage appliances, database, and application servers.
- Demonstrated successful project management skills.
- ITIL Foundations V3 certification required within 90 days of hire.
