About the role

We are looking for an experienced payroll and benefits accounting leader to oversee financial compliance activities for a large employee population in LaVergne, Tennessee. This role serves as a key Finance partner, ensuring payroll- and benefits-related accounting, reporting, reconciliations, and controls are accurate, well-documented, and aligned with regulatory requirements. The position focuses on reviewing and monitoring work performed by internal teams and external providers rather than running payroll operations directly. You will act as a trusted resource to senior finance leadership on payroll compliance matters, risk identification, and process improvement.

Schedule

Monday–Friday on-site

Responsibilities

  • Oversee finance-related compliance for payroll and employee benefits accounting, including reporting accuracy, account reconciliation, and adherence to established controls.
  • Evaluate payroll, human resources, and third-party provider activities to confirm transactions are recorded correctly and completed in accordance with applicable regulations and company standards.
  • Lead detailed reviews of payroll-to-general-ledger activity, accrued liabilities, balance sheet accounts, and benefits-related entries to identify discrepancies and drive timely resolution.
  • Monitor federal and multi-state payroll tax reporting obligations and help ensure filings, payments, and supporting documentation are complete and accurate.
  • Serve as the primary finance advisor on payroll and benefits accounting compliance issues, partnering with leadership to address risks, exceptions, and control gaps.
  • Support oversight of retirement plan accounting and contribution reconciliation processes, including compliance-related reviews tied to 401(k) activity.
  • Investigate variances, reconcile high-volume payroll and benefits data, and perform root-cause analysis to strengthen reporting reliability and process consistency.
  • Document, assess, and test internal controls related to payroll and benefits accounting, and assist with audit requests, regulatory reviews, and compliance examinations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related discipline.
  • At least 7 years of progressive experience in accounting, payroll accounting, compliance, payroll tax, benefits accounting, audit, or internal controls.
  • Strong knowledge of payroll accounting practices, payroll liability management, payroll-to-GL reconciliation, and balance sheet account review.
  • Working knowledge of federal and multi-state payroll tax requirements, including compliance oversight in complex operating environments.
  • Experience assessing payroll and benefits processes within a large, multi-site, or otherwise complex organization.
  • Proficiency in Excel and data analysis, with the ability to interpret large payroll and benefits data sets accurately.
  • Demonstrated analytical and investigative skills, including the ability to identify root causes and challenge results independently when needed.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; experience with ADP Workforce Now, 401(k) compliance, audit support, or large employee populations is highly valued.
