Key Responsibilities
- Manage a portfolio of complex transportation claims (auto liability, trucking, cargo, bodily injury, property damage, and related exposures), including primary, excess, and umbrella layers.
- Oversee the full lifecycle of claims—from first notice of loss through final resolution, including litigation.
- Conduct coverage analysis, draft reservation of rights and denial letters, and interpret complex policy language.
- Establish and maintain appropriate case reserves and evaluate exposure throughout the life of the claim.
- Develop and execute proactive claim resolution strategies, including early settlement opportunities.
- Retain, direct, and manage defense and coverage counsel in line with company guidelines.
- Oversee litigation strategy, budgets, and performance of outside counsel.
- Attend and participate in mediations, settlement conferences, depositions, and trials.
- Handle extra-contractual exposure, declaratory judgment actions, and complex coverage disputes.
- Lead detailed investigations to determine liability, damages, and coverage applicability.
- Analyze contracts, indemnity provisions, and risk transfer mechanisms (e.g., additional insured, contractual indemnity).
- Evaluate claims involving catastrophic injuries, multi-party accidents, and large-scale transportation losses.
- Work closely with insureds, brokers, underwriting, and internal leadership.
- Provide coverage guidance and trend analysis to underwriting and senior management.
- Manage claim and litigation budgets and expenses, ensuring cost-effective outcomes.
- Maintain accurate and timely claim file documentation, reporting, and diary management.
- Prepare and present claim summaries and large loss reports to senior leadership.
- Identify emerging trends in transportation claims and provide actionable insights.
- Support development of best practices, training, and process improvements.
- Serve as a subject matter expert for transportation claims within the organization.
Qualifications
- Juris Doctor (JD) strongly preferred
- 5+ years of relevant experience in insurance claims, litigation, or coverage, in all lines of Casualty with a strong focus on: Commercial Auto
- Demonstrated experience handling large exposure and litigated claims.
- Strong background in: Coverage analysis and policy interpretation Litigation and counsel management Settlement negotiation and mediation
- Ability to manage high-volume, complex caseloads independently.
- Advanced analytical and problem-solving skills
- Strong negotiation and litigation strategy capabilities
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Proven ability to collaborate cross-functionally and influence stakeholders
- High level of attention to detail and organizational discipline

Additional Requirements
- Ability to travel as needed (mediations, trials, client meetings)
- Proficiency in claims systems and Microsoft Office Suite
- Adjuster licensing (or ability to obtain where required)
