Summary Description
Under general supervision, operates a trash compactor truck on a scheduled daily route and performs a variety of tasks in connection with such operations. Employees in this class are responsible for the safe and efficient operation of compactor truck in the loading, transporting, and unloading of compacted trash and burnable waste material. Delivery schedules and related assignments are outlined in detail by supervisors, standard procedures are followed and work is inspected periodically for safety and economy of operation. Supervision may be exercised over helpers.
Physical Demands
- Excellent physical condition and ability to perform heavy manual work for extended periods under difficult weather conditions.
Special Requirements
- Frequently required to report to work during inclement weather and other emergencies.
- Employees in this classification are considered emergency personnel and are frequently required to report to work during inclement weather and other emergencies.
Job Specific Information
- A written and/or hands on assessment may be given.
- Required to wear personal protective equipment as required.
Job Maintenance / Trades
- Completion of the ninth grade required.
- High School or GED diploma preferred.
- Experience in the loading and operation of a trash compactor truck.

Certificates/Licenses
- Possession of a valid Maryland Class B driver’s license, or equivalent.
Wage Range
The wage range for this position is between $22.59 and $31.99 per hour, based on years of service.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
- Knowledge of traffic and highway safety rules and regulations and of the precautions necessary to avoid accidents;
- Knowledge of refuse pick up and disposal activities and the operation of a trash compactor truck.
- Ability to supervise trash service workers and helpers.
- Ability to inspect and make minor repairs and adjustments to heavy automotive equipment;
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions and prepare simple reports.
- Skill in the operation of a trash compactor truck.
