Compactor Repair Technician

San Francisco Bay Area – $37-$40/hour plus overtime.

About the role

As a compactor technician, you will play a vital role in the maintenance and repair of compactors and balers used for waste management, big-box stores, and multi-tenant facilities. Your expertise will ensure these machines operate efficiently and effectively, helping to reduce waste and protect the environment. This is a hands-on position that requires diagnosing and repairing trash compactors, including electrical and hydraulic components. The role may also include site repairs such as balers, tarps, and chutes. When site work is limited, you may assist in the shop assembling power units or performing mechanical or welding tasks. Overtime and on-call availability are required.

Responsibilities

• Diagnose and identify issues with compactors quickly and accurately
• Perform welding tasks as needed
• Use tools for diagnostics, repairs, and maintenance
• Understand and troubleshoot compactor operations and mechanical components
• Lift heavy equipment and perform physically demanding mechanical repairs
• Maintain stamina for physically demanding aspects of the job
• Keep accurate records of repairs, parts used, maintenance activities, and time spent
• Provide detailed reports of machine conditions before and after repairs
• Apply creative problem-solving to address unique and complex repair issues
• Assess root causes of repair needs through analytical thinking
• Clean and lubricate compactors to prevent wear and tear
• Perform electrical troubleshooting, including diagnosing and repairing issues to minimize downtime
• Interface with and troubleshoot Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs)
• Work with limit switches, photo-eye sensors, and solenoids
• Adhere to safety protocols and regulations to ensure a secure working environment
• Implement safety measures during repairs
• Develop effective solutions to resolve mechanical and electrical problems
• Communicate clearly with customers and colleagues about issues and repair steps
• Explain technical details to individuals with varying levels of technical expertise
• Provide excellent customer service by addressing concerns and ensuring satisfaction
• Manage time efficiently to meet repair deadlines
• Prioritize tasks based on urgency and importance
• Inspect, repair, and test equipment thoroughly
• Adapt to different types of machines, including compactors, balers, and chutes
• Stay updated with industry advancements and new technologies
• Train and mentor junior technicians in compactor maintenance and repair
• Assemble power units while working in the shop
• Attend or lead training sessions with other technicians

Requirements

• Must be 18 years of age
• Valid Driver’s License
• Experience as a compactor technician or in a similar role
• Strong knowledge of mechanical systems and electrical components
• Ability to read and interpret technical manuals and schematics
• Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills
• Strong attention to detail and accuracy
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
• Flexibility to adapt to changing work environments and schedules
• Willingness to learn new techniques and machines while keeping up with industry standards

Pay

$37-$40/hour plus overtime.
