Community Outreach Coordinator
General Summary/Objective
The Community Outreach Coordinator position is funded by a special grant from the USDA Forest Service to the Pittsburgh Canopy Alliance. The incumbent motivates and directs stakeholders to Tree Pittsburgh’s programming, assists in creating and collaborating on outreach materials, supports outreach initiatives, and collaborates with internal and external stakeholders to guide and inform programming opportunities.
Job Responsibilities
- Motivate and direct stakeholders to Tree Pittsburgh’s programming, including ReLeaf planning meetings and community surveys, tree plantings, educational classes, and volunteer opportunities.
- Aid in creating and collaborating on outreach materials for constituents, including online and printed materials.
- Support outreach initiatives, such as community canvassing through door-knocking, attending community meetings and events, leveraging and cultivating relationships with key community leaders, and increasing Tree Pittsburgh’s visibility within targeted communities.
- Field and respond to community inquiries and resident questions in a friendly, timely manner while coordinating with the ReLeaf team.
- Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to guide and inform programming opportunities in low-canopied and historically marginalized areas of Allegheny County related to urban and community forestry.
- Maintain sound relationships with municipal officials, community organizations, and other public and private stakeholders and participants in Tree Pittsburgh’s programs.
- Partner with key internal and external stakeholders to ensure service excellence and operational effectiveness in Tree Pittsburgh’s grants, programs, events, and activities.
- Assist in setting programmatic and organizational strategies aimed at engaging communities with low canopy coverage to increase tree planting and care.
Expectations and Qualifications
- Two or more years of professional and/or volunteer experience in community and stakeholder engagement, preferably in the environmental field.
- Ability to obtain a valid driver’s license within the first six months and a clean driving record.
- Ability to obtain reliable transportation, as this role is highly mobile.
- An expected work schedule of evenings, weekends, and extended hours when needed. Flex time is available.
- A passion for and commitment to community greening and Tree Pittsburgh’s mission.
- An understanding of equitable engagement, racial equity, and community partnership best practices.
- A strong desire to actively engage historically marginalized populations in designing solutions to community issues.
- Experience making data-driven decisions and understanding the importance of data management, including the use of systems like ArcGIS or similar platforms, is a plus.
- Excellent written and verbal communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to keep calm and composed under pressure, especially during events.
- Self-motivated and takes initiative – self-sufficiency in time management is key.
- Organizational skills, attention to detail, and multitasking ability.
- Ability to present materials in multiple format settings and various audience sizes.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Canva, and Google Workplace. Working knowledge of additional management and organizational tools is a plus.
Preferred Experience/Knowledge/Skills
- Demonstrated experience working with diverse groups in the environmental or related field.
- Experience working in Allegheny County in the environmental and/or social services fields.
Working Conditions/Physical Demands
- Work is performed both indoors (in the office) and outdoors year-round, under various weather conditions, including tabling at community events, door-knocking, and flyering.
- This position requires: standing, walking, stooping, crouching, kneeling, twisting, and crawling; occasionally lifting and carrying up to 50 lbs over uneven terrain; operating hand tools during tree planting events; driving vehicles, including large trucks; public speaking at community or volunteer events; sitting for extended periods when completing paperwork or training; and completing tasks with limited supervision after initial instruction and training.

Schedule/Travel
This is a full-time position. “Typical” work hours are Monday through Friday, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, with some evenings and weekends. Work location is primarily Tree Pittsburgh’s office, with travel across Allegheny County and occasional opportunities to work from home.
Compensation/Benefits
This is a full-time salary position starting at $50,000. Tree Pittsburgh offers health, dental, and vision benefits, paid birthday and paid time off, a 3% retirement match, and other benefits. Terms and conditions of employment are as per the Tree Pittsburgh Employee Handbook and an Offer Letter.
This position is funded through a restricted grant and is currently anticipated to continue through December 31, 2027, subject to the availability of grant funding and organizational needs.
While funding for the position is currently expected through that date, continued employment is contingent upon ongoing funding, program requirements, satisfactory performance, and business needs. There may be opportunities for extension if additional funding becomes available; however, employment beyond the current grant-funded period is not guaranteed.
