About the role

The City of Homer, Alaska seeks individuals to serve as JAIL OFFICER I and JAIL OFFICER II in the community jail setting. The positions are responsible for providing security, administering prisoner welfare, representing the city/state at court arraignments, and performing administrative tasks.

Responsibilities

  • JAIL OFFICER I:
    • Insures all prisoners have been properly booked upon admission.
    • Maintains prisoner records and ensures incarcerations comply with court orders.
    • Searches visitors, packages, cells, prisoners, etc., to maintain security.
    • Provides basic first aid and dispenses medications to prisoners.
    • Maintains detailed records of all prisoner contact and activities.
    • Enforces jail policies and investigates violations.
    • Represents the city/state at court arraignments and makes sentencing recommendations.
    • Transports prisoners for court appearances, transfers, and medical/dental facilities.
    • Performs minor maintenance and repair of facilities and equipment.
    • Ensures general cleanliness in the jail.
  • JAIL OFFICER II:
    • Prepares statistical reports and billings related to the Homer Jail.
    • Orders police and jail resources, including office supplies, uniforms, and equipment.
    • Controls and accounts for evidence stored in the Evidence Room.
    • Trains JAIL OFFICER I's and assists in the administration of the jail.
    • Performs additional security and administrative duties as outlined.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. citizen or resident alien intending to become a citizen.
  • Must be 21 years of age or older.
  • Must not have a felony conviction or misdemeanor of moral turpitude.
  • Must have a satisfactory moral character record.
  • Must pass a pre-employment drug screen.

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

  • Two years of experience in a correctional or law enforcement setting.
  • Knowledge of Alaska Criminal Code and Alaska Administrative Code.
  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Standard Red Cross first aid and CPR certification.
  • Ability to pass a background check.

Schedule

The schedule is a 207(k) with one week on, one week off.
