Community Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship Clinical Mentor (Instructor Adjoint)

About the Role

The Community Hospice and Palliative Medicine (CHPM) fellowship pathway is a part-time, 2-year virtual clinical fellowship in conjunction with a 2-year Master of Science in Palliative Care (MSPC). The MSPC is administered through the University of Colorado Anschutz graduate education programs and trains a diverse group of palliative care providers—including physicians, nurses, physician assistants, pharmacists, social workers, spiritual care providers, psychologists, therapists, counselors, and ethicists—to become Palliative Care Community Specialists. Graduates provide high-quality palliative consultation and care to patients and families living with serious and life-threatening illness.

The MSPC serves as the foundation for the CHPM Fellowship for physicians seeking board certification in palliative care and hospice. Physicians complete academic coursework virtually, while the clinical portion is conducted in their own geographic location, with or without direct observation of patient interactions. Clinical reasoning and skills are assessed through patient logs, write-ups, journal clubs, asynchronous self-taped videos of communication skills, and documentation of clinical requirements.

As a clinical mentor, you will meet regularly with fellows over two years to assess their clinical reasoning and progression through ACGME Hospice and Palliative Medicine (HPM) milestones and Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs). You will collaborate with other mentors, program leadership, and faculty to ensure fellows receive the support needed to succeed as HPM physicians. The role is anticipated to require 70–110 hours per year.

Responsibilities

• Meet with a cohort of fellows monthly (first-year class) and bimonthly (second-year class) to perform chart-stimulated recall and assess clinical reasoning.
• Review HPM milestones and EPAs with fellows and evaluate their progress in skill development.
• Review program requirements with fellows and ensure they have a plan to complete all necessary components.
• Attend mentor group meetings every other month.
• Attend meetings with the lead of the clinical mentorship program and CHPM director every other month to discuss fellows in your cohort.
• Participate in sub-Clinical Competency Committee (CCC) meetings every other month.
• Provide additional mentorship to fellows who request extra help or are referred by program leadership.
• Review fellows’ independent learning plans.
• Document each fellow’s formative progress after monthly meetings, review quarterly MedHub evaluations with the CHPM director, and contribute to CCC summary letters twice a year.
• Provide input into the evaluation and assessment of the clinical mentor program.
• Contribute to scholarship related to the clinical mentor program.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

• 5 years of clinical palliative care medicine and/or hospice experience.
• MD or DO with an active medical license.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Completion of a palliative care fellowship or other palliative care certification.
• HPM board certification.
• Prior mentorship experience.

Skills

• Ability to communicate effectively in written and verbal contexts, including strong attention to spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
• Proficiency in utilizing ACGME/HPM milestones and HPM EPAs for formative and summative assessments.
• Responsiveness to student concerns and strong time management skills.
• Ability to translate fellows’ academic coursework and communication videos into HPM milestone and EPA levels.
• Effective interpersonal skills, including providing constructive feedback, modeling professionalism, and enforcing program policies.
• Ability to learn and apply the Chart Stimulated Recall Process.

Pay

The starting salary range for this position is $7,000 – $11,000, depending on whether mentoring first- or second-year fellow cohorts. This position is not eligible for overtime compensation.
