Community Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship Psychosocial and Spiritual Clinical Mentor (Instructor Adjoint)

This role is a part-time, 2-year virtual clinical fellowship position in conjunction with a 2-year Master of Science in Palliative Care (MSPC). The MSPC program trains a diverse range of palliative care providers—including physicians, nurses, social workers, spiritual care providers, and others—to become Palliative Care Community Specialists. Graduates deliver high-quality palliative consultation and care to patients and families facing serious or life-threatening illness. This position serves as a clinical mentor for physicians in the Community Hospice and Palliative Medicine (CHPM) Fellowship, focusing on psychosocial and spiritual (PSS) reasoning and communication.

Responsibilities

• Meet with fellows at least once per semester (fall and spring) over two years to assess clinical PSS reasoning and communication through chart-stimulated recall.
• Write a brief summary after each meeting, emphasizing Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs) and Individual Learning Plans (ILPs).
• Review relevant Hospice and Palliative Medicine (HPM) milestones and EPAs with fellows to evaluate their development and progression.
• Attend mentor meetings every other month and quarterly meetings with the lead of the clinical mentorship program and the Associate Program Director (APD)/Director of CHPM.
• Mentor fellows who request additional support or are referred by program leadership.
• Provide input to other cohort mentors regarding fellows’ strengths and areas for growth.
• Document summaries of fellows’ strengths and areas for growth 2-3 times yearly for their Med Hub evaluation and Clinical Competency Committee (CCC) summary letter, and share with each fellow’s primary clinical mentor.
• Contribute to the evaluation and assessment of the clinical mentor program.
• Provide input into scholarship related to the clinical mentor program.
• Deliver 1-2 self-care or reflective lectures for fellows during Thursday evening seminars.

Requirements

• 5 years of clinical palliative care medicine and/or hospice experience.
• Master of Arts in Religion or a related field.

Preferred Qualifications

• Mentorship experience.
• Completion of a palliative care fellowship or other palliative care certification.
• HPM board certification.

Skills

• Ability to communicate effectively in written and verbal contexts, including attention to spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
• Proficiency in utilizing ACGME/HPM milestones and HPM EPAs for formative and summative assessments.
• Responsiveness to student concerns.
• Strong time management skills.
• Ability to translate fellows’ academic coursework and communication videos into HPM milestone and EPA levels.
• Effective interpersonal skills, including providing constructive feedback, modeling professionalism, and enforcing program policies.

Pay

The starting salary range for this position is $4,000.
