Community Health Advocate
Description
Community Health Advocate will conduct on-campus and off-site screenings for the Health Screening Program. The advocate will measure blood pressure, height, weight, waist circumference, and administer finger stick blood sampling. Blood samples will be drawn and analyzed on site using a CardioCheck machine. Lab results from the CardioCheck tests will be provided to each client and reviewed by the advocate as requested. The advocate may provide verbal and written educational materials as needed. The advocate is responsible for transporting supplies, organizing, maintaining hygiene, and managing the flow of participants at his/her station during the screen.
The advocate will work with adult and geriatric patients, maintaining up-to-date knowledge based on disease risk factors and all aspects of prevention and wellness. They will coordinate, clean, and organize supplies at the screening station, monitor clinical lab results and questionnaires, warmly welcome participants, ensure their comfort and confidentiality, explain and educate about lab results and body measurements, market the program as appropriate, and provide input for program maintenance and development. The advocate should demonstrate effective problem identification and resolution skills and communicate effectively. They must promote a positive and cooperative atmosphere within the work unit and display adaptability to change. Operate required vehicles safely to perform job duties.
Minimum Knowledge, Skills And Abilities Required
- Bachelor’s degree in exercise science, nutrition, nursing, or related health field required.
- Experience or high level of interest in disease prevention/lifestyle modification areas preferred.
- Strong organizational and interpersonal skills required.
- Valid Iowa Driver’s/Chauffeurs License required, meeting Mercy’s Motor Vehicle Safety Standards.
- Must meet Mercy’s Motor Vehicle Safety Standards and be at least 18 years of age.
- Proof of completion of Mandatory Reporter abuse training specific to population served within three (3) months of hire.
