Community Engagement Opportunities

Curriculum

The curriculum is designed to prepare students for a career in medicine, focusing on both scientific foundations and clinical skills. It includes:

• Eight mandatory master courses covering topics such as iPro, Genes and Development, Attacks and Defenses, Homeostasis, Energy and Metabolism, Connection to the World, Across the Lifespan, and Professional Responsibility.
• Four long-term longitudinal courses that cover Anatomy, Scientific Inquiry, Populations & Methods, and Biochemistry.
• Ten long-term longitudinal threads that explore topics like Cell Biology, Diagnostic Methods, Embryology, Genetics, Health Equity, Pathology, Nutrition, Pharmacology, Physiology, and Physical Examination.
• Professional responsibility training and clinical skills development throughout the curriculum.

Research

Students have opportunities to engage in research through:

• First-year summer research opportunities.
• One-year fellowships.
• Travel grants for research abroad.

Global Health

The school offers electives and seminars focused on global health, including:

• Africa, Ghana, South Africa, Uganda, and Asia.
• China, India, and Vietnam.
• The Americas and the Caribbean, including Argentina, Arizona, California, Chile, Colombia, and Tennessee.

Student Life

Student life at Yale School of Medicine includes:

• Coaching programs and concentrations in various fields.
• Disability, LGBTQIA+, patient-centered language, race & ethnicity, sex & gender, and full glossary of terms.
• Events and programming such as the New Haven PAUSE Project, Stamp Out Stroke, and New Haven Voices.

Community Engagement

Engagement with the local community is a key part of the curriculum, including:

• HAVEN Free Clinic and Neighborhood Health Project, providing primary care and health education.
• New Haven PAUSE Project, offering footwear and podiatric care to those experiencing homelessness and extreme poverty.
• Health Professions Recruitment Exposure Program (HPREP), aiming to increase minority representation in health professions.
• Program to Advance Training in Health & Sciences (PATHS), providing a transformative learning experience for students interested in pursuing advanced degrees in the biomedical sciences.
• Stamp Out Stroke, educating the community on stroke recognition and prevention.
• New Haven Voices, allowing students to engage with community leaders and understand the needs of the local population.
