Communications Technician, Campus Safety

Position Summary

The Communication Technician (Dispatcher) works in the University of Denver Campus Safety Communications Center, a 24/7 operation. The role involves receiving and dispatching calls and messages to Campus Safety Officers, participating in providing a safe and secure campus environment.

Essential Functions

  • Evaluate calls for proper action and initiate response by Campus Safety Officers or contact outside emergency and law enforcement agencies.
  • Dispatch units on the radio after entering data into a computer as it is received.
  • Handle routine and emergency reports, referral information, alarm maintenance and notifications, campus camera monitoring and alerts, secured door monitoring and alerts, and fire alarm monitoring and alerts.
  • Adhere to Division and University policies, procedures, directives, rules, and regulations.
  • Participate in the Division's recruitment and accreditation efforts.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

  • Sound decision-making and good judgment under pressure.
  • Exceptional customer service to internal and external customers.
  • Proficient utilization of a multi-line telephone system and a two-way radio system.
  • Utilization of Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD) software.
  • Utilization of door security and monitoring system.
  • Utilization and monitoring of campus camera system.

Required Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • 6+ months customer service or related experience.
  • Intermediate to advanced computer skills.
  • Demonstrate and maintain good moral character.
  • Demonstrate ability to multi-task.
  • Pass a job-related skills examination.
  • Pass a complete background check to include criminal and verification of employment and education.
  • Pass a pre-employment drug screen administered by a University-approved facility.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 1+ years experience in dispatching, law enforcement, or related work environment.
  • Experience working in a 911/PSAP working environment.
  • Experience in a lighting and temperature-controlled office setting.

Physical Activities

  • Sit for extended periods of time.
  • Operate telephones, radios, paging devices, and multiple computer terminals.
  • Lift up to 20 pounds.
  • Hear the phone and audible signals from equipment at a level that does not interfere with coworkers' ability to hear at their work stations.
  • Use telephone and radio headset.
  • Focus on a single source of auditory (hearing) information in the presence of other distracting noises.

Work Schedule

40 hours a week. Exact schedule varies.
