Communications Technician
About the Role
Performs all duties and responsibilities related to the operation and maintenance of Field Communications equipment and systems, including Alcatel microwave, MAS-RF SCADA systems, WAN/LAN, Power Systems, Radio Tower Facilities, VSAT services, Cellular Data services, and mobile radio services. Maintains operational compliance within applicable specifications, codes, safety standards, and operating procedures.
Requires detailed knowledge and experience in a wide range of communications-related equipment and system operation, maintenance, testing, analysis, and documentation to comply with Company and Federal Regulations (DOT, OSHA, FCC, FAA, NEC, and Environmental requirements). Familiarity with installation, maintenance, and diagnostics of equipment and systems is essential.
Responsibilities
- Operate and maintain RF Radio services, including Analog and Digital communications, Data & Voice systems.
- Manage Wide Area Networks (WAN) and Local Area Networks (LAN) equipment and systems.
- Maintain Telephone systems, including VOIP PBX equipment, T1 lease lines, and POTS lines.
- Support Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) (PLC/RTU) equipment and related systems.
- Maintain Power Systems, including AC Generation and DC battery systems.
- Perform Communications Towers and Facilities maintenance, operations, and construction.
- Diagnose and maintain Microwave Radio Systems.
- Communicate effectively with all levels of the organization and provide technical training as needed for operational and emergency situations.
- Maintain organized records of maintenance, calibration, testing, and repair to meet company and regulatory compliance.
- Support Capital and Operations & Maintenance projects, including planning, directing contractors, and preparing budget information.
- Prepare, review, update, and implement project plans, installation schedules, as-built drawings, and system modifications.
- Work independently with minimal supervision.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalent required.
- 2-5 years’ relevant work experience as a technician or additional equivalent experience necessary to perform technical support independently.
- Excellent attention to detail.
- Strong computer skills and proficiency in MS Office Suites (Word, Access, Excel, Visio).
- Proficiency in using hand tools, especially for electrical wiring and components at various voltage levels.
- Customer service-oriented with excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work in hazardous conditions, adverse weather, cramped spaces, and perform some heavy lifting.
- Subject to 24-hour call-out, 7 days per week, and possible extended workdays.
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving and safety record.
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate’s Degree in a related technical field (or additional equivalent experience).
- FCC License (desired but not required).
