About the Role

The Department of Health Systems and Population Health (HSPop) has an outstanding opportunity for a Communications Specialist to join their team. Reporting to the Assistant Director of Communications, this role is responsible for managing the online media presence and visibility of associated research centers, the department, and its programs. This position will be part-time at 50% FTE but may vary up to 75% FTE.

Responsibilities

  • Content Creation (65%):
    • Create written articles featuring student success stories, research discoveries, faculty achievements, and more for publication on research center and department websites.
    • Collaborate to produce audio and video content featuring research discoveries and faculty achievements for publication on YouTube, social media, and websites.
    • Design infographics and visual content for event announcements, research highlights, and more for websites and social media.
    • Manage digital distribution channels, including websites, social media, and e-newsletters.
    • Create and coordinate messaging across digital channels to drive traffic from social media to websites.
    • Identify engaging content and collaborate on shared ideas.
    • Determine optimal media formats for maximum impact based on topic and audience.
    • Monitor and analyze content success using KPIs to guide future strategies.
    • Tailor content format and distribution channels to meet audience preferences.
  • Research Center Representation (25%):
    • Produce content in collaboration with research center scientists and coordinators to promote centers, projects, and accomplishments.
    • Participate in communications committees and meetings.
    • Manage and update research center websites.
    • Create and publish content for social media accounts (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram).
    • Write and update content for annual reports, progress reports, and other official documents.
    • Design research briefs, recruitment materials, and other products for research centers.
    • Act as departmental representative for potential students and employees.
  • Image and Branding (10%):
    • Uphold research center, UW, and HSPop brand standards.
    • Maintain and refresh branding for associated research centers.
    • Ensure branding consistency in HSPop materials and online presence.

Qualifications

  • Required:
    • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, or related field.
    • At least 2 years of experience in a communications-related field.
    • Excellent writing and editing skills for professional and general audiences.
    • Experience creating engaging content using video, photos, and written copy.
    • Experience managing professional social media channels (Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube).
    • Experience collaborating with diverse stakeholders from underrepresented groups.
    • Ability to interact respectfully with diverse individuals and communities.
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
    • Highly organized, proactive, and detail-oriented.
    • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and HTML.
  • Preferred:
    • Experience with WordPress, DaVinci Resolve/Adobe Premiere, and Canva.
    • Experience in higher education, public health research, or practice.

Pay

Pay Range: $80,400.00 - $84,000.00 annual (prorated for part-time)

Housed in the UW School of Public Health, HSPop is a dynamic academic and research department dedicated to improving population health through leadership, innovative research, and partnerships. Staff contribute directly to supporting faculty, students, and researchers in advancing public health initiatives.
