Communications Coordinator (1034)
About the role
The Communications Coordinator leads the Sanford School Department's external and internal communications. The Coordinator will devise and implement the communications strategies, public information messaging and social media management to ensure appropriate messaging to promote the image of the School Department. The Coordinator works closely with the Central Office and the Administrative Team as the communications partner on a variety of strategic initiatives.
Responsibilities
- Develops communications plans and communications strategy of the School Department.
- Captures and distributes essential information through communications tools.
- Coordinates and leads production of the School Department's ongoing communications functions, including social media.
- Keeps the School Department's website and social media platforms fresh.
- Assists the Central Office in the drafting and reviewing of media releases.
- Coordinates with the Studio Manager at WSSR-TV to ensure timely and engaging dissemination of information and content on School Department initiatives via the local Educational Access cable channels.
- Builds positive relationships with stakeholders including local organizations, Parent Teacher Associations.
- Stays abreast of current initiatives and activities in order to inform the public.
- Writes, creates, coordinates and publishes newsletters and other promotional materials as required.
- Coordinates branding across all platforms and media, including printed materials, to ensure effective and consistent use of School Department logos, taglines and images consistent with the School Department brand.
- Aids in the preparation of communications to families on a variety of district matters, including student disciplinary hearings.
- Updates the Sanford School Department Policy Manual once policies have been approved by the School Committee.
- Supports the School Committee with the minutes of School Committee meetings.
- Supports The Sanford Schools Legacy Foundation with the website updates and support.
Requirements
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and abilities preferred. Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, public relations, marketing or related field. At least 2 years of Public Relations/Communications/Marketing experience with a proven record of accomplishment in a fast-paced environment preferred. Any equivalent combination of education and experience. Related School Department or public service knowledge preferred. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, both one-on-one and in group settings. Strategic thinker who excels at devising and executing original, creative and innovative ideas and messaging. Strong organizational skills and ability to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines. Ability to independently excel and exercise good judgment in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities. Ability to take a positive team approach to working with school, community and business partners. Proven experience with digital and technology skills, including mastery of Google Workspace applications such as Docs, Sheets, Gmail, and Slides, and strong knowledge of Adobe software, including Photoshop, InDesign and Acrobat. Knowledge of various social media platforms and ability to use back-end website platforms for targeting recipients. Passion for being part of a team-oriented, mission-driven school culture. Ability to respond positively to common inquiries or complaints from stakeholders as necessary. Ability to write presentations and articles that conform to a professional style and format. Ability to represent the School Department in a professional, progressive and positive manner. Ability to maintain confidentiality. Ability to communicate material in an engaging and understandable manner while maintaining accuracy. Excellent interpersonal skills and willingness to collaborate with colleagues and partners across multiple departments. Valid Maine Department of Education fingerprinting certification.
