Communications and Marketing Manager
About the role
The East Bay Permanent Real Estate Cooperative (EB PREC) is a multi-stakeholder coop that facilitates BIPOC and allied communities to cooperatively organize, finance, purchase, occupy, and steward properties, taking them permanently off the speculative market. We create community controlled assets and empower our communities to cooperatively lead a just transition from an extractive capitalist system into one where communities are ecologically, emotionally, spiritually, culturally, and economically restorative and regenerative.
Purpose of the Position
The Communications & Marketing Manager’s main purpose is to communicate EB PREC’s vision and work to our community and to the broader public. You’ll help plan and implement our overall messaging strategy by designing, writing, and publishing or sending out blog posts, newsletters, campaign emails, social media posts, press releases, and other promotional materials. You’ll coordinate with other staff members to facilitate ongoing communications to various stakeholders, as well as support our fundraising and investment campaigns with your great writing skills. You’ll also build and maintain relationships with the press, other media outlets, and partner organizations to spread the word about EB PREC and position us as a major player within the larger coop and housing justice movement.
Major Responsibilities
Strategy - Co-create and drive an updated marketing/communications strategy for EB PREC in collaboration with Executive Director and other staff
Manage an organizational dashboard of select marketing metrics that are most strategic to cooperative goals
Analyze and develop strategies to improve marketing metrics as strategies to achieve organizational goals
Review prior communications and branding documents (website, flyers, presentations, documents, and other collateral)
Manage communications cadence in support of organizational needs and priorities
Co-develop, implement, and support communications and narrative strategies for specific projects and EB PREC as a whole
Communications Assets - Assess, maintain, and update communications materials as needed, including:
- Website (design and content)
- Capital Campaign materials
- Investor facing outreach & marketing packages
- Community Facing Materials
- Social Media posts
- Media Library (Press articles, videos, documents)
- Annual reports
- Physical goods and org merchandise such as apparel, pins & stickers
- Signage
- Event marketing materials, flyers, posters, eventbrite graphics
- Professional presentations, videos and press releases
- Internal narrative and strategy documents, talking points and creative briefs
- EB PREC’s Branding and Style Guide
Brand Monitoring and Management - Monitor and manage EB PREC’s materials inventory, ordering new materials as needed, and modifying them based on audience research
Press - Work with Executive Director to write press releases, press kits, media advisories, op-eds, and other statements for the general public
Maintain & Grow press lists to ensure consistent and effective presence in the media
Maintain & Grow list of partner organizations to help boost our communications (such as events, openings, opportunities, etc) both locally and within mission-aligned spaces
Newsletter - Write periodic newsletter and support the strategic positioning of EB PREC’s work in a larger political context to support BIPOC and allied movements for economic justice
Social Media - Implement our overall media and communications plan and brand identity across multiple platforms (social media, press, website, newsletters, outreach materials)
Build our identity & following
Develop, gather and produce visual and written content for all EB PREC social media platforms on a regular basis, with an emphasis on creating more video content (especially for Instagram Reels and potentially TikTok)
Support other staff with various communications needs, including:
- Training staff on branding, style guide, and strategy implementation
- Creating and demonstrating graphic layouts/templates
- Creating & updating fundraising campaign-specific materials for new projects
- Event promotion, general outreach, organizational development, and special projects
Audio, Visual & Graphic Design Production - Liaise with and support EB PREC stakeholders (investors, community members) to produce their own testimonials in order to stimulate grassroots, word-of-mouth authentic marketing for the cooperative
Events - Working in-house or with contractors to document and produce content about EB PREC events, including tours, presentations, and speaking engagements
Liaise, collaborate and follow-up with subcontractors as needed to drive deliverables to completion
Technology - Manage and utilize multiple technology platforms central to this role, including but not limited to
- Google Workspace
- Asana (Project Management)
- Miro (Process Management)
- Bit.ly (Shortlink management)
- Linktr.ee
- Emailchimp (Newsletter Platform)
- Bigin (CRM)
- Zapier (app integration/automation)
- Buffer (social media management)
- All social media platforms
- Canva or more advanced graphic design suite (Adobe or Affinity)
Core Qualifications
Ability to write politically and social justice informed messaging for social media and newsletter
Experience developing and implementing communication strategies
Excellent writer and communicator
Highly attentive to accuracy, detail and nuance
Experience in developing high quality multimedia collateral, including blogs, graphic design, videos, websites and podcasts
Skilled at time management with the ability to juggle both short and long term deadline and the ability to respond to organizational needs as they arise
Adept at learning digital tools and campaign/project management systems such as Google Suite, Asana, Mailchimp, etc.
Familiarity with website maintenance and design
Ability to take notes, track tasks and follow-up proactively
Strong commitment to anti-racism and anti-oppressive movement building
Strong commitment to collective decision-making and working in a staff collective
Adequate self-motivation and flexibility
Desired Qualifications
Creative out-of-the-box thinker
Experience with deep collaboration across multiple teams
Experience writing and distributing press releases for mission-driven organization(s)
Experience with visual storytelling
Experience in fundraising and development, ideally with community-based organizations
Experience building and developing cooperative and social justice organization campaigns and programs (either as primary leader or part of leadership cohort)
Knowledgeable about EB PREC’s unique approach, programs especially our cultural strategy
Hours, Pay, and Benefits
This position is full time (30 hrs/wk) at $76,363 per year. EB PREC offers health and dental insurance, Medical FSA, Dependent Care FSA, Paid Time Off (PTO), 11 paid holidays, flexible scheduling for work/life balance, professional development allowance, and home office reimbursement. This position is hybrid, half remote and half in-person at EB PREC’s office in West Oakland (a few blocks from the West Oakland BART Station), with some meetings and events taking place on evenings and weekends.
