About the role

The Communications and Digital Media Manager supports the growing needs of the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute and the Health Sciences and Technology campus. Reporting to the Director of Communications, the position involves providing communications strategy and technological expertise to the institute; producing high-quality products for research, fundraising, and marketing efforts; and executing photography, videography, production, editorial, and administrative functions in all areas of marketing, publications, publicity, events, social media, print, and web communications.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as chief photographer for the Research Institute and Virginia Tech Health Sciences and Technology.
  • Provide professional photography and photographic editing, create photo galleries, schedule photo shoots, conduct photo research, collect photo releases, maintain photo library.
  • Produce video and multimedia stories to emphasize the value and wonder of biomedical research, and to build good will and financial support.
  • Collaborate with University Relations, School of Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, and Carilion Clinic multimedia teams on projects.
  • Maintain video library.
  • Interact with the FBRI Advisory Board as needed, providing counsel and assistance in digital and social media.
  • Advise and train faculty and graduate students on best social media practices.
  • Contribute to the development and production of the FBRI website and social media presence, drafting online-exclusive material, entering images and text in the content management system, and participating in the website redesign.
  • Execute graphic design and editing services for print brochures, advancement one-pagers, Powerpoint presentations, and other products as needed, from creation to the printer or digital page.
  • Create monitor flyers and videos.
  • Promote e-newsletters as needed.
  • Serve as a member of a team providing administrative support to the Fralin website’s content management system, including entry of new employee data.
  • Provide technical advice, information, or logistical specifications when needed; establish details of programs/exhibits; and/or obtain materials, equipment, or services through contacts with students, faculty, internal staff, vendors, donors, and/or volunteers.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Considerable knowledge of webcasting, AV technology, digital photography/videography, advanced photographic techniques, and professional quality standards.
  • Prior communications experience in media relations, communication plans, digital marketing, photography, and production.
  • Demonstrated ability to work as a member of a team and independently, to work under tight deadlines, and to assume responsibility for accurate completion of assignments.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, time management, and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated facility with computers and an understanding of web-development tools.
  • Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite software, especially InDesign, Photoshop, and Adobe Premiere Pro.
  • Knowledge of standard office suite software, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
