About the role

The Office of Enterprise Infrastructure offers essential networking, systems administration, and customer-focused services to ensure the efficient and cost-effective use of communication and computing technologies by faculty, staff, and students at TCNJ. Information Technology/Enterprise Infrastructure provides campus-wide support for administrative and academic computing applications and services. This position is within the Enterprise Infrastructure networking group, which is responsible for installing, maintaining, and configuring campus network equipment as well as the data, telephone, and CATV cable systems.

Responsibilities

  • Troubleshoot and/or repair data and voice connections in academic/administrative offices, classrooms, residence halls and exterior locations.
  • Maintain and update documentation for campus cabling and networking infrastructure.
  • Participate actively in a team environment for the design development and coordination of wiring projects for both the inside & outside cabling plant.
  • Assist network staff in equipment installation and troubleshooting data networking problems.
  • Assess and troubleshoot multi-pair communications cable infrastructure for both inside and outside plant installations.
  • Aids in troubleshooting Cable TV service and signal problems on trunk and distribution plant.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Graduation from an accredited college with a Bachelor's degree supplemented by a Master's degree in a field related to the position to be filled or equivalency.
  • Requires four years of practical experience installing, troubleshooting, and maintaining a multi-building copper voice/data/CATV cabling infrastructure and racked equipment and cabling systems.
  • In particular, this includes demonstrating the following:
    • The application of technical standards and practices dictating the termination and certification of UTP and coaxial station cabling.
    • The application of local, site-specific design and operations standards for infrastructure systems.
    • Experience troubleshooting and repairing UTP and coaxial station cabling.
    • Experience testing, troubleshooting, and repairing feed and riser cables.
    • Experience applying EIA/TIA standards for communications interconnects in voice and data applications.
    • Knowledge of communications cable installation within renovation and new construction spaces.
    • Skilled in termination and testing of various twisted-pair and coaxial communications media.
    • Able to read and interpret schematics, floor plans, and/or construction drawings.
    • Able to coordinate, certify, and document communications cabling installations.
    • Knowledgeable in using testing tools and apparatus (such as multimeters, time-domain reflectometers, intelligent network cable testers, etc.).
    • Skilled in interpreting results from to assess the quality, condition, and/or performance of twisted-pair and coaxial communications media in both active (connected) and disconnected circuits.
    • Able to select the proper testing method and apparatus required for the application.
    • Experience working in a mixed voice/data termination installation.
    • Able to interpret connector and cable schematics and apply this information to the troubleshooting, specification, selection, or construction of custom cable assemblies and/or adapters.
    • Knowledge and experience working with intra- and inter-building communications cabling distribution facilities in a multi-building campus environment.
    • Knowledge and experience working on racked equipment and cabling systems in data centers and building distribution facilities.
    • Skilled at interpreting and applying local, institution-specific principles of equipment organization and cable management.
    • Knowledge and experience in the general use of a computer and typical office applications (email, web browsing, word processing, spreadsheet, etc.), as well as the ability to apply oneself to learning new computer applications.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in communications distribution design for all levels of twisted-pair, coaxial and/or fiber-optic cable plant preferred.
  • Knowledge and experience maintaining and troubleshooting coaxial and fiber-optic cable distribution systems preferred.
  • Experience with configuration and troubleshooting of enterprise network switches preferred.
