About the role
The Communications Officer position at Klickitat County serves as a vital link between the public and emergency services. The role involves receiving and prioritizing emergency and non-emergency calls, dispatching appropriate units, and maintaining radio contact with field officers.
Responsibilities
- Evaluates incoming emergency calls and requests necessary information to dispatch appropriate units.
- Provides information and assistance to the public and refers complaints to appropriate personnel.
- Completes numerous outgoing calls and maintains thorough and accurate information.
- Ensures compliance with local laws and regulations.
- Operates various communication equipment and follows prescribed radio procedures.
- Becomes certified on ACCESS/WACIC computer consoles to access relevant law enforcement data.
- Maintains logs of all radio transmissions, phone calls, and actions taken.
- Communicates effectively and handles multiple situations simultaneously.
- Assists walk-in traffic and performs clerical duties as needed.
- Coordinates with other agencies on the common radio frequency.
Requirements/Minimum Qualifications
- Knowledge of local public agencies and law enforcement, fire, and emergency departments.
- Basic law enforcement principles and techniques.
- Medical and first aid skills to assess call nature and dispatch appropriate units.
- Local geography, streets, buildings, and landmarks.
- Ability to learn and carry out explicit orders.
- Clear, well-modulated voice and ability to follow critical procedures.
- Physical capability to perform essential functions.
- Valid state driver's license.
