About the role

AWS Infrastructure Services owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure. We support all AWS data centers and the servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling equipment that ensure our customers have continual access to the innovation they rely on. You’ll join a diverse team of software, hardware, and network engineers, supply chain specialists, security experts, operations managers, and other vital roles, collaborating across AWS to deliver the highest standards for safety, security, and seemingly infinite capacity at the lowest possible cost.

As a Data Center Commissioning Engineer (CxE), you will be part of a highly creative, efficient team tackling fascinating and challenging problems in building and supporting Amazon-owned data centers. The Amazon Commissioning team (ACx) evaluates, defines, and manages construction quality expectations in accordance with engineering designs to meet customer requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Provide testing and validation oversight of AWS data center electrical and mechanical infrastructure.
  • Review design documents, lead Factory Witness Testing (FWT), and manage third-party commissioning vendors for onsite pre-functional, functional, and integrated systems testing.
  • Take ownership of project successes by resolving technical issues and addressing schedule and coordination demands.
  • Provide multi-discipline input into scheduling, test script development, designing, and planning of projects.
  • Review component submittal packages, lead Factory Witness Testing (FWT), and perform system-level and integrated system testing.
  • Audit activities to ensure compliance with environmental, quality, and safety requirements during commissioning.
  • Provide comprehensive weekly reporting on the status of ongoing projects and lessons learned to improve program quality.
  • Collaborate with AWS engineering, capacity delivery, operations, and contractor teams to coordinate site activities and prioritize tasks.
  • Manage project commissioning vendors to identify issues, determine criticality, propose solutions, and document findings.
  • Escalate risks to project turnover to appropriate stakeholders.
  • Communicate lessons learned and participate in initiatives driving improvements to the commissioning program.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of engineering, installation, or startup/commissioning experience with electrical and mechanical systems.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, or 5+ years of relevant discipline work experience.
  • High technical competency in mechanical, electrical, or control systems used in critical infrastructures, with the ability to learn others.
  • Ability to understand design concepts and intent by reviewing mechanical or electrical design documentation, including drawings, specifications, vendor submittals, and sequences of operations.
  • Develop and review commissioning documentation such as test plans, scripts, and reports to ensure accuracy in accordance with design requirements.
  • Ability and willingness to travel domestically and internationally for up to 80% of the year.
  • Required to provide personal transportation for meetings and job visits away from the office (reimbursed).
  • US Citizenship required.

Physical Requirements

  • Walk job sites in uneven terrain.
  • Work at heights and from ladders.
  • Regularly walk, use hands and fingers, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • Lift and/or move up to 49 pounds; participate in group lifts for 50 pounds or more.
  • Carry objects weighing up to 49 pounds for short distances.
  • Work shifts longer than eight hours, including nights and weekends.
  • Perform physical tasks throughout the day without becoming overly tired.
  • Manipulate small wires and objects easily.
  • Work in noisy, cold, or hot environments (outside a normal office setting).

Skills

  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook); SharePoint (or similar) preferred.
  • Strong communication skills, detail-oriented, highly organized, and able to work in high-stress environments.
  • Advanced knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and controls systems for critical infrastructures.
  • Ability to read and edit construction documents (design drawings, control diagrams, specifications, etc.).

About the Team

The AWS Data Center Commissioning Team (ACx) is an independent business within the DCGS organization. This team consists of veteran professional Electrical Engineers, Mechanical Engineers, Controls Engineers, Architectural Engineers, Project Managers, Operators, and seasoned Amazonians. They provide deeply detailed engineering and operational reviews and testing of equipment designs, operational functionality, and construction practices. The team focuses on ensuring rapid delivery of a quality product while maintaining transparency, recording metrics, and identifying opportunities for improvement.

Pay

The base salary range for this position is:

  • USA, GA, Atlanta: $116,800.00 - $160,000.00 USD annually
  • USA, NC, Charlotte: $116,800.00 - $160,000.00 USD annually
  • USA, TX, Austin: $116,800.00 - $160,000.00 USD annually
  • USA, TX, Dallas: $116,800.00 - $160,000.00 USD annually
  • USA, TX, Houston: $116,800.00 - $160,000.00 USD annually

Your Amazon package will include sign-on payments and restricted stock units (RSUs). Final compensation will be determined based on experience, qualifications, and location.
