Commerical Electrician I

About the Role

An Electrician I (Level 1 Commercial Electrician) has a minimum of 4 years of relevant experience in the commercial or industrial electrical field. This role reports to a Foreman or designated supervisor to perform assigned functions in accordance with company policies and procedures. Work involves installation, alterations, additions, and repairs of electrical systems, equipment, and associated materials within the electrical construction industry.

Responsibilities

• Work within precise limits and standards of accuracy while performing a variety of duties that often change.
• Utilize reason and logic to perform mathematical operations rapidly and accurately.
• Interpret construction drawings and details, recognizing differences in planes, shapes, or shading to visualize 2D diagrams as 3D objects.
• Direct and work with an Electrician Helper as directed by a Supervisor.
• Accurately install conduit, wire, pre-fab assemblies, panel boards, light fixtures, devices, and other equipment per layout provided by the Supervisor.
• Minimize material waste, ensure installation quality, and follow Supervisor’s task layout.
• Follow diagrams and blueprints to install concealed wiring before completion of walls, ceilings, and flooring.
• Measure, cut, thread, ream, assemble, and install conduit using tools such as hacksaws, pipe threaders, and conduit benders.
• Pull wire, splice wires by stripping insulation, twisting wires together, and applying terminal connectors or tape.
• Connect wiring to light fixtures, power equipment, motors, devices, and other electrical apparatus using hand and power tools.
• Test continuity of circuits and wiring to ensure compatibility and safety using test instruments.
• Observe functions of installed equipment to determine hazards or need for adjustments, relocation, or replacement.
• Repair faulty equipment or systems as needed.
• Complete required paperwork and monitor safety per the company’s Safety Program.
• Demonstrate knowledge of tools, equipment, and trade practices.
• Coordinate installation with other trades.
• Gather materials and proper tools to complete assigned tasks.
• Assist Supervisor in troubleshooting electrical branch circuits and feeders.

Requirements

• Minimum of 4 years of electrical experience in commercial or industrial settings.
• High School Graduate or GED.
• Valid state driver’s license (preferred but not required).
• Applicable federal, state, and local certifications as required by job conditions or the company.
• Journeyman License preferred but not required.
• Resume, references, background check, and drug screen testing required.

Preferred Skills

• Basic math skills.
• Dependable transportation and willingness to commute daily to job sites within a 50-mile radius.
• Effective communication skills.
• Commercial electrical construction experience, including EMT & GRC conduit installation and MC cable experience.
• Ability to install switchgear, panels, and terminations.

Working Conditions

• Work in all weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, or snow.
• Utilize construction site sanitary facilities (e.g., Porta-Johns).
• Carry required personal tools at all times (waist tool belt weighs approximately 30 lbs.).
• Work from ladders, scaffolds, aerial lifts, catwalks, and other elevated areas (up to 90” from ladders).
• Personal weight with tools must not exceed the rated weight capacity of ladders used.
• Work in restricted areas such as switchgear rooms, manholes, utility tunnels, and crawl spaces.
• Wear personal protective equipment as required by the company’s Safety Handbook.
• Able to work 40 hours per week plus overtime, including night shifts and out-of-town work if required.

Skills

• Identify colors of wires and other items accurately.
• Read and comprehend blueprints, drawings, and schematics.
• Bend conduit by hand using hand benders.
• Safely use power tools and operate equipment such as trenchers, lift trucks, and aerial lifts.
• Dig trenches using hand tools or power equipment.
• Comprehend and practice safe work procedures as outlined in the Company Safety Handbook.
• Operate two-handed tools and company trucks with manual or automatic transmissions.
• Read and interpret maps, instructional manuals, work site directions, and written instructions.
• Operate and work from mechanical personal lifts (electric or gas-powered).
• Assist with energized circuits and equipment as outlined in the Company Safety Policy Manual.
• Effectively supervise electrical helpers to complete tasks safely and accurately.

Physical Requirements

• Hear and see well (naturally or with correction).
• Bend, stoop, squat, crawl, climb, kneel, balance, push, pull, and reach overhead.
• Lift objects weighing up to 100 pounds, with frequent lifting and carrying of objects up to 50 pounds.
• Tolerate prolonged standing and movement on foot.
• Climb ladders of all types and perform overhead work for extended periods.
• Secure tools and materials from storage areas to complete tasks.
• Repetitive use of arms, hands, and fingers.
