Regional leadership role overseeing underwriting, profitability, and business development for a defined Commercial Surety territory.
Responsibilities
- Serve as lead underwriter for the assigned territory; analyze, evaluate, and approve commercial surety submissions within delegated authority.
- Review financial statements, interim reports, WIP schedules, bank agreements, credit reports, tax returns, and other underwriting data.
- Structure and negotiate terms, collateral, indemnity agreements, and risk-mitigation measures; set capacity, pricing, and renewal terms.
- Monitor portfolio performance and take corrective action to meet profitability targets; participate in large-account reviews.
- Deliver responsive, solution-oriented service to brokers and insureds; resolve complex underwriting and relationship issues.
- Travel throughout the territory to maintain agency and client relationships; collaborate with claims, legal, accounting, and operations teams.
- Recruit, train, mentor, and develop commercial surety underwriters; provide technical guidance and coaching.
- Establish underwriting goals, performance expectations, and best practices; foster a collaborative, performance-driven culture.
- Own profit-and-loss results; manage portfolio mix, pricing adequacy, retention, and growth metrics.
- Conduct periodic book reviews to identify trends, opportunities, and emerging risks; evaluate and manage agency performance.
- Develop and execute regional marketing and production plans; build relationships with retail and wholesale surety brokers.
- Identify and pursue new business opportunities aligned with company risk appetite; conduct joint sales calls and agency visits.
- Represent the company at industry events, conferences, and association functions; drive submission flow and market visibility.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Business, Accounting, Finance, or related field (required).
- Advanced degree or professional certifications (e.g., AFSB, CPCU) (preferred).
- Minimum 5 years of underwriting experience in the surety industry.
- Strong financial statement analysis and credit underwriting skills.
- Proven success developing agency relationships and generating profitable growth.
- Excellent negotiation, communication, and presentation skills.
- Ability to exercise independent underwriting judgment and work within deadlines.
- Proficiency in underwriting software, Microsoft Office Suite, and Adobe.
- Willingness to travel throughout the assigned territory.
- Authorized to work for any U.S. employer without sponsorship.
