About the role
As a key member of UMB’s Commercial & Industrial lending team, the Portfolio Manager acts as the gateway for new loan deals and the steward of existing commercial loan relationships. You will collaborate with Relationship Managers to assess client needs, analyze historical cash flow and industry data, and qualify loan requests. The role also involves facilitating the administration of new and existing loan accounts, monitoring deal performance, identifying expansion opportunities, and ensuring compliance with covenants and payment standards.
Growth opportunities include staying credit-focused or transitioning into a client-facing role, while serving as a problem solver for both clients and internal teams to drive the commercial bank’s loan growth.
Responsibilities
- Manage and monitor the commercial portfolio, identifying early warning signs through recurring analysis of borrower/guarantor financial performance (monthly, quarterly, or annually).
- Analyze borrowing base and financial covenant compliance, payment performance benchmarks, and conduct regular financial reviews to ensure loans perform as underwritten.
- Underwrite new and existing loan business using Microsoft Excel and Word, evaluating client relationships, trends, collateral, cash flow, and industry risks.
- Collaborate with administrative staff to ensure compliance with loan documentation requirements.
- Provide recurring customer service to existing and prospective clients through joint sales calls with Relationship Managers or direct correspondence.
- Support the commercial underwriting pipeline for both new and existing loan business.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Business, Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- 5+ years of commercial banking experience, including credit underwriting (8+ years preferred).
- Current valid driver’s license.
- Strong communication skills (verbal and written).
- In-depth knowledge of loan processing, including maturing loans, line renewals, term loan extensions, restructuring, approval processes, and term modifications.
- Strong understanding of credit underwriting principles.
- Familiarity with bank products, services, and operations.
- Ability to interpret policies/procedures, loan contracts, credit reports, financial statements, and loan documents.
- Strong analytical skills and proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Knowledge of commercial lending software.
- Self-starter with initiative and ability to mentor less experienced peers.
- Ability to prospect and network at various levels within a company (preferred).
Pay
Compensation Range: $81,864 - $120,406. The posted range represents UMB’s good faith and reasonable estimate based on its budget and expectations for the role, though actual compensation may vary by geographic location, experience level, and other job-related factors.
