Combination Inspector / Building Inspector
About the role
The position involves inspecting buildings for compliance with building codes and ordinances, both in-office and on-site. You will maintain detailed records, respond to public and professional inquiries, and prepare cases for the Building and Standards Commission. Staying updated on code changes, construction trends, and inspection procedures is essential.
Responsibilities
- Inspect a variety of buildings for compliance with building codes and ordinances
- Maintain detailed written records of inspections
- Respond to questions and complaints from the public, city staff, contractors, architects, and engineers
- Prepare cases about dangerous structures for the Building and Standards Commission
- Study code and ordinance changes, attend educational seminars, and stay current with construction trends and inspection innovations
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Two years of inspections or related experience (strong construction background in framing, electrical, plumbing, or construction management may substitute for inspections experience)
- Must obtain International Building, Residential, and Energy Conservation Code certifications within a specified timeframe
- Valid Class C Texas driver’s license
- For advancement to the higher pay range, must acquire a State of Texas Plumbing Inspector license, International Plumbing Code certification, and other applicable licenses
Bilingual (English/Spanish) skills are beneficial. If hired at the lower range as a Building Inspector, you will primarily conduct electrical inspections (TDLR electrical license preferred).
Pay
Pay Grade GG17: $25.45 - $35.88 per hour ($52,944 - $74,640 annually)
Pay Grade GG20: $29.47 - $41.52 per hour ($61,308 - $86,376 annually)
