About the Role

Combination Building Inspector, under the general supervision of the Chief Building Official, ensures code and zoning compliance through inspections of commercial and residential construction.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts inspections of commercial and residential construction projects (electrical, plumbing, mechanical, building, and related) to ensure code and some zoning/development standard compliance
  • Reviews commercial and residential construction plans for compliance with relevant codes and regulations
  • Maintains detailed documentation of inspections, violations, actions, plan reviews, and compliance for legal purposes
  • Consults with and advises stakeholders (homeowners, builders, design professionals) on plans, code compliance, interpretations, and related procedures
  • Investigates construction-related complaints, issues violation notices (Stop Work Orders, Dangerous Building notices), and reports unsafe conditions
  • Collaborates with other city agencies on design, licensing, and code requirements
  • Fosters positive working relationships with various stakeholders
  • Recommends improvements to existing codes, regulations, policies, and procedures
  • Assists in the investigation of fires, explosions, or hazardous conditions and orders evacuations when necessary
  • Actively participates in team functions, meetings, and activities to support team goals
  • Follows City financial policies, procedures, and safety guidelines
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Combination Building Inspector I or II: Two (2) years of experience in building inspections, code enforcement, or construction trade
  • Combination Building Inspector III or IV: Three (3) years of relevant experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in construction science, industrial technology, architecture, engineering, or related field
  • Previous construction inspection experience

Certificates and Licenses

  • Inspector I: Two (2) ICC Residential and/or Commercial Inspector certification OR Master Trade License (Plumbing, Electrical, Mechanical) AND One (1) ICC Residential and/or Commercial Inspector certification OR Texas State Plumbing Inspector License
  • Inspector II: Texas State Plumbing Inspector License AND Two (2) ICC Energy Certifications (Residential and Commercial)
  • Inspector III: Texas State Plumbing Inspector License AND Two (2) ICC Energy Certifications (Residential and Commercial) AND Two (2) ICC Residential and/or Commercial Inspector Certifications
  • Inspector IV: Texas State Plumbing Inspector License AND Two (2) ICC Energy Certifications (Residential and Commercial) AND All four (4) ICC Residential Certifications (Plumbing, electrical, energy, mechanical) AND 1 ICC Commercial Certifications & Code Enforcement license OR Texas State Plumbing Inspector License AND Two (2) ICC Energy for Residential & Commercial Certifications AND All four (4) ICC Commercial Certifications (Plumbing, electrical, energy, mechanical)

Pay

Hourly wage is dependent on certifications and related years of experience.
