About the Role

The BWC Administrator represents the agency at all levels of Industrial Commission (IC) hearings, providing legal advice and consultation to service offices, especially the Cambridge Service Office, and handling claims determinations, risk matters, and other operational legal issues.

Responsibilities

  • Represent BWC at Industrial Commission hearings.
  • Prepare for hearings by reviewing claim files and analyzing legal issues.
  • Interpret laws, rules, and regulations; advance legal arguments; examine witnesses; and present evidence.
  • Review hearing notices and IC decisions, interpret orders, and decide on appeals.
  • Provide legal advice to service offices, BWC administration, and staff on claims, risk, and operational matters.

Requirements

  • Admission to the Ohio Bar per Section 4705.01 of the Ohio Revised Code.
  • Ability to provide own transportation (or legally operate a state‑owned vehicle).
  • Probationary period of 12 months.
  • Overtime exempt status pursuant to OCSEA/AFSCME Article 13, Section 13.10.
  • Flexibility to work variable hours based on operational need.
  • Travel a few times per month.

Skills

  • Knowledge of law, public relations, human relations, BWC policies & procedures, Workers’ Compensation & Industrial Commission law, claims management, and state insurance fund.
  • Proficiency with personal computer applications.
  • Ability to define problems, conduct legal research, collect data & evidence, establish facts, and recommend appropriate legal recourse.
  • Experience reviewing, editing, and drafting appeals, motions, legal reports, memoranda, and hearing summary sheets.
  • Strong public speaking, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Capability to handle difficult interactions with injured workers, employers, and their representatives.

Training & Development

  • Completion of continuing legal education for attorneys per Rule X of the Ohio Supreme Court.
  • Compliance with attorney registration per Rule VI of the Ohio Supreme Court.

Pay

$28.76 per hour.

Schedule

Full‑time. Core hours are Monday‑Friday, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm. Flex‑time schedules allow start times as early as 7:00 am or as late as 8:30 am, subject to supervisor approval and operational need.
