About the role

The Anne Arundel Community College (AACC) Certified Police Officer is tasked with protecting life and property at AACC. Officers work in all weather and hazardous conditions, maintaining physical and mental readiness for traditional law enforcement while adopting a Community Policing attitude. This position is designated as essential, requiring the employee to work 52 weeks a year except for earned annual and sick leave.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct diligent vehicle and foot patrols of campus parking lots, streets, sports fields, buildings, classrooms, labs, and offices.
  • Enforce Criminal Law, Civil Law, Education Article, Maryland Traffic Law, and Student Code of Conduct.
  • Conduct criminal and traffic investigations, interview and interrogate suspects, and make full custody arrests.
  • Collect and preserve evidence, and testify in court.
  • Maintain building security by locking and unlocking campus property.
  • Provide First Aid, CPR, Emergency Medical, and Combat Casualty Care to the sick and injured.
  • Perform vehicle jump starts, lockouts, tire changes, and assist with pets or children locked in cars.
  • Enforce the smoking policy and assist with traffic control and direction as needed.
  • Identify and contain hazardous material spills on or near campus.
  • Provide traffic control for community functions held on campus.
  • Interact with persons experiencing mental health crises and work toward resolutions.
  • Train for and respond to active shooters, barricades, suicides, and hostage situations.
  • Maintain updated and thorough knowledge of laws and college policies.
  • Act as Officer in Charge in the absence of the Shift Commander, directing and supervising staff.
  • Inspect and maintain equipment and college police vehicles.
  • Gain access to and utilize databases including MVA, National Crime Information Center, Report Exec, Data Tel Student database, J-Portal, E-Tickets, and Automated Crash Reporting System.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Maryland Police Training Commission (MPTC) Certification.
  • Minimum of two years of relevant experience.
  • Must be 21 years old and a U.S. Citizen.
  • Must pass an oral interview, polygraph, physical examination (including a stress test), and psychological evaluation.
  • Must undergo an extensive background investigation and drug screen.
  • Must possess a valid Maryland Driver’s License with a good driving record.
  • Must be capable of operating a Public Safety Police vehicle in various conditions, including emergencies.
  • Must demonstrate proficiency in the use of a handgun, handcuffs, O.C. Spray, Expandable Baton, and other department-approved equipment.
  • Must be capable of gathering information through interviews and preparing investigative reports.
  • Must work flexible rotating hours, including evenings, nights, weekends, college closings, and required overtime due to staffing shortages.
  • Must maintain physical condition to perform rescue functions, including lifting, dragging, and carrying people in emergencies.
  • Must successfully pass all mandatory annual in-service and retraining programs.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge, skills, and ability in tactics and weaponry.
  • Trained in Active Shooter response, breaching doors, and tactical movement.
  • Experience in a higher education environment.
  • Knowledge of Title IV, Clery Act, FERPA, and Violence Against Women Act.
  • Advanced Medical Training.
  • Familiarity with facilities and maintenance equipment and procedures.
  • Ability to educate the college community in crime prevention and self-defense.

Pay

$28.41–$35.51 per hour

Benefits

Eligible for a comprehensive benefits package. Pay dates occur on the 7th and 22nd of each month (or the prior Friday if those dates fall on a weekend).
